Geoffrey Pope Is Cleared and Wants Apology
Magically, Geoffrey Pope has been cleared of any and all allegations relating to hitting the son of Local 4 News anchor Carmen Harlan’s over the head with a champagne bottle on Friday night. Pope’s agent, Rich De Luca, told ProFootballTalk.com that Pope was cleared after the man responsible for swinging the bottle of bubbly turned himself in. De Luca also told them that the Giants are aware of what’s going on and will be issuing a statement soon. That only took one day, and I thought it was going to be a well fought battle in the courtroom.
In a subsequent post on ProFootballTalk.com, a statement was made on behalf of Pope. “Pope feels that he was being targeted because he is on a high profile team. He feels he deserves an apology from Channel 4 news because of how intense they made the situation. After pleading with the Detroit police and letting them know that he wasn’t the suspect, Pope was arrested under false accusations. The suspect came forward Sunday, June 22nd and turned himself in.”
That’s how things used to go down in professional sports. Every athlete shows up somewhere with their entourage and one of the members of the crew becomes the fall guy. Somebody’s got to be the fall guy, but never the athlete. Think back to the Ray Lewis incident in Atlanta. In came Roger Goodell, and now the athlete has to take the heat for his own actions. Think back to Michael Vick. I’m sure that the NFL will be investigating this situation as well as Ahmad Bradshaw’s.
