Big Blue Wrecking Crew 3rd Best Linebacking Corps

June 21, 2008 By: Keith Category: Bill Parcells, Carl Banks, Gary Reasons, Harry Carson, Lawrence Taylor, NFL, New York Giants No Comments →

NFL.com is full of lists right now.  Everyday, they have a new list for something.  This one is definitely worth pointing out because it’s one of my favorites.  So they made a list of the ‘Top 10 Linebacking Corps in NFL History’.  Here it goes…

  1. Jim Mora’s Saints - “Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills, Vaughan Johnson and Pat Swilling combined for 13 trips to the Pro Bowl and helped the Saints earn respectability.”
  2. 1970s Steelers - “Hall of Famers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert were integral parts of Pittsburgh’s famed “Steel Curtain,” the catalyst for four Super Bowl wins.”
  3. Bill Parcells’ Giants - “Lawrence Taylor grabbed the headlines, but Harry Carson, Gary Reasons and Carl Banks were key contributors on two Super Bowl-winning teams.”
  4. Hank Stram’s Chiefs - “Hall of Famers Bobby Bell and Willie Lanier, along with the unheralded Jim Lynch, dismantled the favored Vikings in Super Bowl IV.”
  5. 1985 Chicago Bears - “Otis Wilson, Mike Singletary and Wilbur Marshall ran Buddy Ryan’s 46 defense to perfection as the Bears dominated the NFL.”
  6. Vince Lombardi’s Packers - “Led by Ray Nitschke, and also featuring Dave Robinson and Lee Roy Caffey, this group was key to one of the NFL’s greatest dynasties.”
  7. Steelers of the mid-1990s - “The foursome of Levon Kirkland, Kevin Greene, Greg Lloyd and Chad Brown weren’t the “Steel Curtain” revisited, but weren’t too far off.”
  8. 1980s Raiders - “Hall of Famer Ted Hendricks, as well as Matt Millen and Rod Martin, were major contributors on the last Raiders team to win a Super Bowl.”
  9. Orange Crush - “Randy Gradishar, Bob Swenson, Joe Rizzo and Tom Jackson teamed up to lead the Broncos to their first Super Bowl appearance.”
  10. 2000 Ravens - “Led by Ray Lewis, and complemented by Peter Boulware and Jamie Sharper, the Ravens defense dominated opponents en route to a title.”

Bill Parcells

I love great defenses so this is a list for me.  Some of the franchises above are defensive powerhouses historically like the Bears, the Giants, and the Steelers.  It is great to see that the original Big Blue Wrecking Crew got themselves up to No. 3 on the all-time list.  Those were the days.  In the same decade, the Jets had Mark Gastineau and Joe Klecko who anchored the New York Sack Exchange which were defensive lineman not linebackers.  I would love to see the Jints put out a linebacking corps like that right now.

Earlier this morning, ‘Boomer and Carton’ of WFAN talked to former great Giant Line Backer, Carl Banks, and asked him about Paul Pierce, Plaxico Burress’ possible holdout, and Father’s Day.  Banks believes that Burress outperformed his contract and deserves a raise because the Giants got him at a bargain.  Carl believes that Strahan is a first ballot Hall of Famer.  To hear the interview in its entirety, click here.

Super Bowl Sunday’s Giants News

February 03, 2008 By: Keith Category: Bill Belichick, Carl Banks, Eli Manning, George Martin, Jeff Feagles, Lawrence Tynes, NFL, New York Giants, Ottis Anderson, Phil Simms, Plaxico Burress, Super Bowl XLII, Tom Coughlin, Wellington Mara No Comments →

Lombardi TrophySuper Bowl Sunday is here.  I’m ready for the game.  I’m ready to see Big Blue put tons of pressure on Tom Brady.  I want see the Giants rattle Brady for all 4 quarters.  In Week 17, the Giants attacked for the first 3 quarters and then it seemed like they got tired and Brady came back and won the game for the Pats.  This time, there is no getting tired.  Just attack and attack and attack the quarterback.  The G-MEN have to give 150% tonight to pull off the upset.  I still think that the Giants could win the Super Bowl.

Welcome to the Good Life - Keith Karlsson thinks that the 2007 draft class is one of the main reasons the Giant are in Super Bowl XLII.

Friday’s Giants Links

Antonio PierceThe amount of Giants news this week has been unbelievable.   And with that said, there really isn’t anything written really well about the Giants.  It’s all mostly common sense stuff like the Giants have to run the ball against the Bucs.  There has been some great stories in The Post this week about the Knicks, but we’re not here to talk about the Knicks.  There has been some great stories about Roger Clemens, but were not here to talk about him either.  And it’s all deserved.  And by the way, I’m very happy that I didn’t have to listen to Tiki, Shockey, and Strahan complain all season.  Thanks for listening to Coach Coughlin when he told you all to shut up and play with the exception of Tiki who’s job now is to talk and talk and talk.

Newsday:

Five things the Giants must do to Beat the Bucs

Giants credit Spagnuolo for turning around defense - On the defensive side of the ball, I’m very happy with Spags as I said yesterday.

Giants’ Gilbride salutes Bucs’ defensive guru - I bet he did.  Gilbride struggles putting up points in every game so I’m sure that this is a real challenge trying to figure the Bucs out.  I hope that we can get a new OC this offseason, but we’ll cover that in the offseason.

New York Daily News:

Upbeat Giants feel playoff ghosts are things of the past

Inside the Matchups: Giants at Bucs

Moment is right for Eli Manning to follow Peyton’s lead - I love the positive vibes coming out of the Daily News.  Gary Myers tells us how Eli can win a first round Playoff game faster than Peyton did.  He doesn’t mention the talent difference between the Colts and the Giants though.  When Peyton couldn’t win a Playoff game, it was because they only had 3 offensive players that mattered and Peyton being one of them.  Eli has played on Giants teams with some of the best at their position in the game like Tiki, Shockey, Toomer, Burress, etc.  With the talent around Eli, he should win faster, but he isn’t as integral to the offense as Peyton was.  If Eli only handed off to James and threw to Harrison then he wouldn’t be in the Playoffs.

Plaxico Burress to Bucs’ Ronde Barber: Worry about me, not Eli Manning - Burress tries to deter Ronde Barber.  Obviously, Ronde will be covering Plaxico, but maybe Ronde knows that he’s in a few blitz schemes to bring Eli down.

Road-savvy Giants believe they can travel all the way to the Super Bowl - These comments were provided by Plaxico and TuckI wish they reserved these kinds of comments for the locker room.

Jon Gruden: Brandon Jacobs poses big problem - I heard the interview with Gruden on Monday, I believe.  The Daily News is bringing this to us late.  Obviously, Gruden knows that the Giants want to hand the ball off to Jacobs all day.  So, he’s going to have everybody shut Jacobs down and I believe it will be successful for a while because it will be their primary focus.  What the Giants need to do is keep doing it until the Bucs are worn out and can’t tackle him anymore.  OC Gilbride needs to stick with the run no matter what.
