Giants Training Camp Report: 8/3

August 03, 2008 By: Keith Category: Aaron Ross, Amani Toomer, Andre' Woodson, Anthony Wright, Brandon London, Chase Blackburn, Corey Webster, Craig Dahl, Craphonso Thorpe, Danny Clark, David Carr, David Tyree, Domenik Hixon, Eli Manning, Gerris Wilkinson, Justin Tuck, Kevin Boss, Kevin Dockery, Mario Manningham, Michael Jennings, NFL, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora, Plaxico Burress, R.W. McQuarters, Sam Madison, Shane Olivea, Sinorice Moss, Steve Smith, Terrell Thomas, Zak DeOssie No Comments →

The Giants had to go back to work today, unfortunately. Below you will find a bunch of notes and reports assembled by a variety of beat writers. The Giants play their first game on Thursday so make sure you watch it.

The Star-Ledger

  • Since Plaxico Burress has been unable to practice, he is contributing as an adviser to the Giants’ young receivers. Plax is taking on the mentor role even if the young guys don’t ask for it.
  • Mike Garafolo assembled an in-depth 8/3 morning practice report worth checking out. Below is a sample of the entire report. There’s much more where that came from so go check out the source.
    • DEs Justin Tuck (foot) and Osi Umenyiora (hip), WRs Plaxico Burress (ankle), Amani Toomer (leg), Mario Manningham (groin) and David Tyree (knee/PUP), LBs Zak DeOssie (back) and Gerris Wilkinson (knee/PUP), CB Sam Madison (sports hernia), RT Shane Olivea and S Craig Dahl (knee) did not practice.
    • There we go again: first play of team drills was a bomb. Again from QB Eli Manning to WR Domenik Hixon. Great tackle on the play by CB Aaron Ross. Too bad it was way before the ball got there. That’s a 40-yard pass interference penalty on Ross.
    • QB Anthony Wright and WR Michael Jennings hooked up for deep in.
    • WR Craphonso Thorpe got the crowd excited with a spinning, toe-tapping catch on a fade to the left side from Wright. Dockery was in coverage on the play.
    • Hall ran a nice route to catch a hook from QB Andre’ Woodson in front of Webster. Hall later went deep on Pope, but the ball from Wright was overthrown and out of bounds.
  • Mike Garafolo assembled an in-depth 8/3 evening practice report also worth checking out. Below is a sample of the entire report. There’s much more where that came from so go check out the source.
    • WRs Plaxico Burress (ankle), Steve Smith (groin), David Tyree (knee/PUP) and Mario Manninghan (groin), LBs Gerris Wilkinson (knee/PUP) and Danny Clark (sports hernia), CB Sam Madison (sports hernia) and OT Shane Olivea (back) did not practice..
    • CB Corey Webster would have none of WR Domenik Hixon catching a fade on the left side. He stayed all over Hixon and knocked the ball away. Webster also stayed stride for stride on a go from QB David Carr to WR Sinorice Moss. Webster had such good position it almost looked like he was the intended receiver. Webster knocked it away for a PD.
    • Hixon ran a perfect comeback to get separation from CB R.W. McQuarters and make a diving catch. McQuarters bounced back with a PD a few plays later when WR Craphonso Thorpe ran the same pattern.
    • LB Chase Blackburn keeps making plays. I mean, this guy couldn’t get a job after the draft a few years ago and now he’s a steady backup in my mind. Tonight, he stayed with Boss on a post into the end zone and wrestled with him to grab a ball from Wright for an INT.
    • WR Brandon London made his first nice grab in a few days on a skinny post over CB Kevin Dockery. Not a bad ball at all from Woodson. London then did a great job of accelerating to at least get his hands on a deep incompletion from Manning. The ball was overcooked and I didn’t think London had a prayer of getting there, but he dove and almost made the catch after getting past CB Terrell Thomas.
  • Plaxico Burress did some light running for the first time since training camp.

Big Blue Blog

  • Paul Schwartz assembled his own morning practice notes. Below is a sample of his notes, but there are not too many more.
    • On Manning’s second pass, Ross made another aggressive play, storming in to bat away a pass in the flat. Unfortunately for Ross, the ball was picked out of the air by RB Derrick Ward for a completion.
    • David Carr could not have thrown a better pass on a deep toss to Sinorice Moss, who had a step on two rookies, S Kenny Phillips and CB Terrell Thomas. The ball floated down perfectly to Moss … who watched as it slid right through his arms and to the grass. Moss looked up to the sky in bewilderment.
    • TE Kevin Boss, who has caught virtually everything thus far in camp, could not make the grab on a lunging attempt from Manning over the middle.

Inside the Giants

  • Tom Rock believes that Sinorice Moss is basically playing for his Giants career in this camp so he’s been under the microscope this first week and a half. That means every drop is written about, and to be fair, there have been a lot of them. Moss had a pretty good practice tonight.

Friday’s Giants News

February 22, 2008 By: Keith Category: Bill Belichick, Craig Dahl, Derrick Ward, Gibril Wilson, Jerry Reese, John Mara, Kawika Mitchell, Michael Strahan, NFL, New York Giants, Reggie Torbor, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

Bill BelichickYesterday, I was wrong about why Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese were holding those press conferences.  They were holding them to discuss the Combine, not Tom Coughlin’s contract extension.  There is plenty of Giants news today which is surprising because it’s the offseason.  Most of it is revolving around the ongoing rumors about New England videotaping opposing defenses.  Now a story was written about the Giants being videotaped during a Preseason game in 2006, and another story was written on how the Patriots have been doing it since 2000.  Also, there is a rumor that the Giants are interested in trading for DeAngelo Hall of the Falcons.

Newsday:

WFAN’s Boomer, Carton ‘having a blast’ - The G-MEN are not mentioned in this article, but Newsday categorized it as a Giants article.

New York Daily News:

Giants: We’re open to new Strahan deal - Ralph Vacchiano provided us with a few notes about Big Blue.

  • The Giants announced that they might be open to redoing Micheal Strahan’s one-year deal which is currently $4 million.
  • John Mara stated that all of the Giants’ Assistant Coaches were given 2-year or 3-year contracts with raises.
  • Last, rookie S Craig Dahl had a torn ACL which led to him failing his physical so he was cut by the Giants.

New York Post:

GIANTS TAKING CARE OF THEIR OWN - Paul Schwartz lets us know how the Giants are taking care of their own:

  • The Giants and Tom Coughlin are still working on the contract extension.
  • Tom Coughlin will speak at the Combine today, and Jerry Reese will speak at the Combine tomorrow.
  • Gibril Wilson and Kawika Mitchell are set to become unrestricted free agents so the Giants want to re-sign them before they hit the open market.
  • The Giants already re-signed Jeff Feagles and Lawrence Tynes, but they want to bring back Reggie Torbor and Derrick Ward.
  • “For the second consecutive offseason, the Giants do not figure to be huge players in free agency. However, according to a published report, they are exploring the possibility of trading their first-round draft pick (31st overall) to the Falcons in exchange for cornerback DeAngelo Hall.”

REPORT: PATRIOTS* TAPED GIANTS IN 2006 - The NY Post continues to use an asterisk next to anything related to the Patriots.  The Post Staff Report wrote this “The Patriots were caught videotaping Giants assistant defensive coaches in the final preseason game of 2006, according to a new report.”  Nowhere does it say ‘allegedly’.  But seriously, nobody cares about the Preseason.  Following that, the Post Staff Report went on to say “The incident led the NFL to send out a letter to teams detailing interpretations of the rule against taping an opposing team’s signals, the New York Times reported today.”  It’s funny though.  You never heard of any of this stuff until the Jets allegedly tipped off the NFL about the Patriots stealing signals in Week 1.  Since then, other teams keep adding their two cents.

New York Times:

New Claim of Taping Emerges Against Patriots - When you open up the article, the picture is of Bill Belichick and Drew Bledsoe so you know it’s old.  John Branch and Greg Bishop wrote that this videotaping of opposing teams supposedly began in the preseason of 2000 (which is when Belichick became the Head Coach of the Pats), and those are the words of a “former Patriots player”.  I find that interesting because in 2007, supposedly none of the players knew what the coaches were doing…hmmm, makes me wonder.  Belichick told Commissioner Goodell that he misinterpreted the rules.  Many people have been questioning how much of an advantage this gives the Pats, so Branch and Bishop included on-the-field examples of how the Patriots would execute play calling by recognizing the formation of the defense.  I wrote it when the New York Football Giants won Super Bowl XLII, and I’ll write it again…God set things straight in the Super Bowl because the Patriots cheated.  The same thing happened in the World Series when the Tigers cheated and lost to the underdog Cardinals.

Giants Set to Reward Coughlin With Multiyear Deal

The Star-Ledger:

Coughlin’s press conference - Mike Garafolo provided the transcript of Tom Coughlin’s press conference.

DeAngelo is in Indy - Mike Garafolo lets you know the rumors why Hall is in Indianapolis.

NY Giants pursuing Falcons’ CB Hall - I already included the rumor about DeAngelo Hall, but he went on to discuss the topic more in depth.  The Giants originally were interested in Marcus Trufant (Seattle) and N’namdi Asomugha (Raiders), but both of them were franchised by their respective team.  Good thing we didn’t end up with Trufant because he was part of that Seattle team that quit once it started snowing in the Divisional Playoffs in Green Bay.  Trufant looked soft and did nothing.  Another player that the Giants were interested in was Asante Samuel (Patriots), but the Giants believe that most of his success has been due to the scheme rather than his individual talent.  Now back to Hall, he’s the real deal as far as Cornerbacks are concerned.  With that said, Hall comes with a whole lot of baggage.  He was fined $100 thousand last season for shouting at the Coach of the Falcons, Bobby Petrino.  Personally, I don’t want any part of DeAngelo Hall.  I don’t want the clowns of the NFL on the Giants.  We have Strahan and that is more than enough for me to handle.  The Giants are expected to cut R.W. McQuarters very soon, and they would cut Sam Madison as well if they work out this deal with Hall.

Coughlin’s deal a matter of time - We already covered the status of Coach Coughlin, but here’s a sidenote at the bottom of the article that I found interesting, “The Giants coaches and scouts had dinner last night at Shula’s Steakhouse in the Westin Hotel that’s connected to the RCA Dome. The irony of dining in a restaurant owned by the coach of the 1972 Dolphins a few weeks after preserving their spot as the only perfect Super Bowl champ in history wasn’t lost on Mara.  “I was a little disappointed to find out Coach Shula wasn’t picking up the tab,” Mara joked.”

New York Giants LogoOn the final day of 2007, we would like to thank all of you who have stuck with Die Hard Giants Fan throughout the 2007 season.   We had a lot of fun in our first year doing this.  We enjoyed all of your comments during the season and we hope you make even more noise now as the G-MEN head into the Playoffs.  We also hope you stick with us in the offseason, in 2008, and in years to come.  It also makes it easier writing about the Jints when they finish the season 10-6 and make the Playoffs.  It was also special to go through a game of such magnitude like the game against the Patriots in Week 17.  It was a meaningless game for the Giants, but it was everything for the 15-0 Patriots.  We all know that the Patriots have to win the Superbowl to make this perfect season really perfect.  However, I hope we face them again in a month and beat them.  For now, we know that we get to watch at least one more game next weekend when the Giants face the Bucs down in Tampa Bay.

Injuries to Giants’ O’Hara, Mitchell not serious - This is great news!  Even though the injuries are not serious, it does not mean that it won’t impact their play on the field.  Both O’Hara and Mitchell sprained their knees.

Escalator malfunction injures fans

Giants-Pats most watched program of 2007 - I buy that…America had an opportunity to watch history in the making and it was available on 4 channels.  Also, it was our biggest day since lauching DieHardSportsFan.net.  On 12/29/2007, we had 911 visits which is more than double our average daily visits of 408 in December.

New York Daily News:

Tom Coughlin says Giants’ effort against Patriots worth the injuries

Time for Eli Manning to take Giant step into second round of playoffs - I agree with this concept

Bucs rested and ready for Giants

Bay watch starts for Tom Coughlin - At the bottom of this article, Ralph Vacchiano included the teams that the Giants will face in 2008: “The Giants’ opponents for next year are: home games against Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, San Francisco, Seattle, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Carolina; and road games at Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, Arizona, St. Louis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Minnesota.”  They are in no specific order, but it’s good to know.  So the NFC East has to play the NFC West and the AFC North in 2008.

Jason CampbellI remember reading this article that Trip wrote on Die Hard Cowboys Fan when the Cowboys played the Redskins:

And here is another article by Thomas Boswell of the Washington post.

Boswell says, despite being an injury ravaged group, and led spectacularly by the QB, the Redskins came within a play of providing the knockout punch.

I guess Anthony Henry and Terry Glenn don’t count for anything. Of course, the Cowboys have been missing players all year, so its accepted now.

And I never thought for second, even if the Skins scored that TD, Romo wouldn’t take them down the field for a kick. Yes, it’s a good feeling.

This QB cries like half a fag when he loses an NFL game.  Pathetic.  When the Giants clinch that Playoff spot on Sunday Night, I want to see Jason Campbell drop some tears.

GIANTS HOST ANNUAL TOYS FOR TOTS - Michael Eisen wrote,

The New York Giants, in partnership with the United States Marines, will hold their annual Toys for Tots drive at Giants Stadium when they host the Washington Redskins on Sunday, December 16, 2007. Fans are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to any of the collection receptacles located at each entrance to the stadium prior to the game. Thirty uniformed Marine Corps Reserves will be on hand to assist in collecting these gifts.

Back-ups review

Offense:

QB: Jared Lorenzen and Anthony Wright are strong QBs but still need some adjustment with their accuracy

RB: Reuben Droughns, Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw will switch up the pace nicely

FB: Robert Douglas will hopefully recover well and make a great addition

TE: Kevin Boss and Michael Matthewshave been fitting in with the team and with the plays as well

WR: Steve Smith, David Tyree and Anthony Mix are solid back-ups. They’re very well rounded and all have great speed and hands.

OL: Zach Piller, Grey Ruegamer, Guy Whimper and Adam Koets have been doing very well but I feel need better coaching to position themselves.

Defense:

DE: Adrian Awasom has been doing average work and will need to step it up if he wants to be around next year

DT: Barry Cofield, Manny Wright and Jay Alford need an extra push. I can definitely see them becoming successful just need to put extra aggression in their style of playing.

LB: Chase Blackburn, Reggie Torbor, Zak DeOssie and Gerris Wilkinson will be great back-ups. Chase and Reggie are above average compared to Zak and Gerris but we can depend on all our options if need be.

CB: Corey Webster, Kevin Dockery and Aaron Ross are the best additions. Any of these guys can be put in the field starting day and make a hell of a contribution

SS: Michael Johnson and Craig Dahl will do fine. I still believe we need to work on them a little more to compete with top receivers

Overall we have a strong team here. We can depend on some back-ups more than others but I’m sure they will all be watching themselves carefully to better their own skills.

Preseason Game 4: New York Giants vs. New England Patriots

August 30, 2007 By: Keith Category: Brandon Jacobs, Chase Blackburn, Craig Dahl, Eli Manning, Lawrence Tynes, Manuel Wright, NFL, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora No Comments →

Tonight’s match-up is between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.  I’m hoping to see Big Blue come out of the Preseason with a 2-2 record.  After this game, we’ll have a week and a few days to get ready to go into Dallas and tear the house down.  I’ll write more about my dislike for the Cowboys between the end of tonight’s game and game day.  For now, let’s give the Pats a whoppin’ without an injury.

1st Quarter

The Giants elect to receive.  Bradshaw takes a knee in the back of the end zone.  Manning hands it off to Jacobs who runs up the gut for 4 yards.  On 2nd and 6, Eli hands it off to Jacobs for a pick up of 4 again.  On 3rd and 2, Manning passes to Shockey for a short gain but a first down.  Manning passes deep but incomplete to Matthews.  On 2nd and 10, Manning passes deep to Mix who dropped it as he got JACKED UP by to Pats defenders.  Mix should have held onto it.  On 3rd and 10, Manning passes to Shockey for a first down.  Manning hands it off to Jacobs for about 6.  On 2nd and 4, Manning passes to Mix for a first down.  Manning hands it off to Jacobs for a gain of 1.  On 2nd and 9, Manning passes to Shockey who makes 2 guys miss before going down after picking up the first down.  At the Patriots’ 28 yardline, Eli hands it off to Jacobs for a 5 yard pick up.  On 2nd and 5, Manning passes to Shockey on the sideline at the 3 yardline.  On 1st and Goal, Manning hands it off to Droughns who gets pushed him backwards.  There is an Offsides penalty against the Pats which moves the Giants half the distance to the goal line.  On 1st and Goal, Manning overthrows Matthews.  On 2nd and Goal, Manning hands it off to Jacobs who goes nowhere.  On 3rd and Goal, Manning hands it off to Jacobs who got within the 1 yardline, but could not get in.  On 4th and Goal, they are going for it.  Eli Manning hands it off to Brandon Jacobs who punches it in.  After 16 plays, the Giants were able to score against the Pats’ second team defense.  Giants lead 7-0.  The G-MEN Kickoff, and Jones runs it back to the 31 yardline.

On 1st and 10, Cassel passes to Mills for a 8 yard gain.  On 2nd and 2, Cassel passes to Childress for a first down.  Cassel hands it off to Evans for a gain of 4.  On 2nd and 6, Cassel throws it very far away from any receiver.  On 3rd and 6, Cassel got sacked by Osi Umenyiora, and Robbins was there too.  The Patriots punt, and McQuarters called for a fair catch at the 20 yardline.

On 1st and 10, Lorenzen hands it off to Ward for a couple.  On 2nd and 8, Lorenzen passes to Boss for another 2 yards.  On 3rd and 6, from shotgun gets sacked for a 10 yard loss.  The Giants committed a Personal Foul again which pushed them back half the distance to the goal line.  From the 6 yardline, the Giants punt, and Jones calls for a fair catch at the Patriots’ 49 yardline.

On 1st and 10, Cassel passes incomplete to Mills.  On 2nd and 10, Cassel from shotgun passes to Childress in the middle of the field for a 34 yard gain.  On 1st and 10, Cassel from shotgun throws a screen incomplete.  On 2nd and 10, Cassel hands it off to Evans for a 3 yard gain.  On 3rd and 7, Cassel passes to Mills who got tackled before picking up a first down.  On 4th and Goal, Stephen Gostkowski attempt a 37 yard Field Goal, and it’s good.  That 7-3 Giants.  The Patriots Kickoff, and Bradshaw takes another knee deep in the end zone.

On 1st and 10, Lorenzen passes to Meriweather for a gain of 8.  On 2nd and 2, Lorenzen hands it off for an 8 yard gain.  That concludes the 1st Quarter.  Giants 7-3.

2nd Quarter

On 1st and 10, Lorenzen hands it off to Ward who picks up 8.  On 2nd and 2, Lorenzen hands it off to Ward who picks up a first down.  On 1st and 10, Lorenzen passes deep to Moss who couldn’t pull it in.  On 2nd and 10, Lorenzen hands it off to Droughns who goes nowhere.  On 3rd and 10, Lorenzen from shotgun overthrows on a pass to Mix.  The Giants punt, and it went out of bounds at the 13 yardline.

On 1st and 10, Cassel hands it off to Evans for a yard.  Good stop Big Blue.  On 2nd and 9, Cassel got deflected and there is a flag on the play.  It is Illegal Use of the Hands which gives the Pats 5 yards and a first down.  Cassel scrambles and picks up 3.  On 2nd and 7, Cassel from shotgun passes to Evans for an 11 yard gain, but there is another flag on the play.  This one is for the same exact thing…Go figure…the penalty was declined so it’s a Pats first down.  Cassel hands it off to Evans for no gain, and another flag is thrown.  Personal Foul against the Giants and the Patriots get 15 yards.  At the Patriots’ 45 yardline, Cassel passes to Kight.  On 2nd and 2, Cassel completes it to Rivers for a gain of 19.  Cassel completes it for 5.  On 2nd and 5, Cassel throws a screen for 4.  On 3rd and 1, Cassel hands it off to Evans who takes it to the 13 yardline.  On 1st and 10, Cassel from shotgun misfires.  On 2nd and 10, Cassel passes to Kight in the middle of the field who brings it to the 1 yardline.  On 1st and Goal, Cassel hands it off to Evans for no gain.  On 2nd and Goal, Cassel keeps it and got stopped short.  The Giants committed 12 Men on the Field, and the Pats get half the distance.  On 2nd and Goal, Matt Cassel hands it off to Heath Evans who punches it in.  That’s 10-7 Patriots.  The Patriots Kickoff, and Bradshaw takes it out of the end zone to the 16 yardline.

On 1st and 10, Lorenzen gets sacked for a loss of 6.  On 2nd and 16, Lorenzen from shotgun hands it off to Droughns for a couple and a flag is thrown.  Personal Foul against the Giants and backed up 15 yards.  This is the stuff I can’t take.  On 3rd and 20, Lorenzen tosses it to Droughns in the end zone, and Droughns knew he was getting tackled so it seemed like he threw it out of the end zone.  It was called a fumble and Droughns got it back.  On 4th and 25, the Giants Punt, and Jones was the Returner who had a short gain before getting tackled at the Giants’ 43 yardline by Grant.

On 1st and 10, Vinny (from Floral Park) is in at QB.  He hands it off and Wright makes a big tackle in the backfield for a 5 yard loss.  On 2nd and 15, Testaverde from shotgun passes it to Rivers for a gain of 5.  On 3rd and 10, Vinny from shotgun passes it short of the marker.  The Patriots punt and down it at the 2 yardline.

On 1st and 10, Lorenzen hands it off to Droughns who picks up a couple.  On 2nd and 7, Lorenzen hands it off to Droughns again who finally picked up a gain over 7 yards.  The gain was for 32 yards.  I like it.  On 1st and 10, Lorenzen hands it off to Droughns again who goes backwards.  We hit the 2:00 warning.  Lorenzen passes to Boss for about 7.  On 3rd and 5, Lorenzen throws it short to Smith.  On 4th and 5, Giants punt, and Jones called for a fair catch at the 18 yardline.

On 1st and 10, Testaverde passes incomplete to Childress.  On 2nd and 10, Testaverde from shotgun hands it off to Smith for no gain.  The Giants called Time Out.  On 3rd and 10, Testaverde hands it off for a 5 yard gain.  The Giants called another Time Out.  On 4th and 5, The Patriots punt with 1:28 in the half, and the Patriots were called for a False Start and this backs them up 5 yards.  On 4th and 10, the Patriots punt, and Ross calls for a Fair Catch.

On 1st and 10, Lorenzen from shotgun passes to Droughns for a pick up of 3.  On 2nd and 7, the Giants were called for a False Start which backs them up 5 yards.  On 2nd and 12, Lorenzen from shotgun gets sacked again for a loss of 6 yards.  On 3rd and 18, Lorenzen threw a bomb to Smith on the sideline, but he couldn’t make the catch.  On 4th and 18, the Giants punt, and it bounced out of bounds at the 36 yardline with 0:23 remaining.
