Thursday’s Giants News: Shockey Expected to Return to NY

June 05, 2008 By: Keith Category: David Tyree, Jay Alford, Jeremy Shockey, Lawrence Taylor, Michael Strahan, NFL, New York Giants, Renaldo Wynn, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

NFL.com put together a list of the ‘Top 10 pass rushers in NFL history’.  Before I opened it, I thought about how many Giants were on the list.  Obviously, I thought of LT and Michael Strahan.  I wasn’t sure of how many there could be before my time, which isn’t long ago.  When I opened up the list, there weren’t any more Jints than the two I assumed.  Taylor was 3rd which doesn’t make sense to me, and Strahan was 7th.  They have Deacon Jones 1st, but I’ve never seen him play.  The late Reggie White is 2nd, and I always though LT was better than White.  Plus, LT has 2 rings and White has 1.  At the same time, I’m comparing a LB to a DE.  The article contains three videos for each member of the Top 10 list if you want to check them out.

Mailbag for June 4 - Michael Eisen fields questions posed by Giants‘ fans.  Here’s a good question because the last thing I want to watch this year is the Super Bowl hangover:

Michael,
Tom Coughlin was on the staff  the last time the Giants won the Super Bowl. They didn’t make the playoffs after the 1991 season. What will he do, and how will keep the team focused, and not have the team letdown during this upcoming season?

Dear Russell:

The Coach is well aware of the pitfalls that claim the repeat aspirations of most recent Super Bowl champions. He has reminded the players that the hard work they put in last offseason led to their championship and the importance of not letting up this year. In fact, as he handed each player his Super Bowl ring last week, Coughlin said, “Let’s get back to work so we can do this again.” The coach is not letting up one inch or ounce. He is demanding the same dedication to effort and detail that proved so successful last season. The ring ceremony was the last event of the 2007 season. Everyone’s energy is now committed to making 2008 a successful year.

New York Daily News:

After Super Bowl grab, David Tyree is hoping to hang on with Giants - Ralph Vacciano believes that the “Giants are overloaded at receiver, which could put Tyree’s roster spot in jeopardy if he suffers any setbacks.”

Giants to see Jeremy Shockey soon - Ralph Vacchiano stated that Jeremy Shockey is actually supposed to make it up to New York next week.

The enigmatic tight end is expected to participate in the Giants’ mandatory mini-camp next week, according to a team source. He is due in the New York area later this week for a promotional appearance on Saturday afternoon.

According to an advertisement on the Internet, Shockey is scheduled to appear at the Powerade Pro Challenge at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, although his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, could not be reached to confirm his client’s plans. If Shockey shows up, it will be his first public appearance since he was stuck watching Super Bowl XLII from a luxury box because of his broken leg.

The Pro Bowl will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET.  It will be held at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.  It is the last NFL game until September so enjoy it.  It is tough to enjoy because it is meaning less.  The offseason is long and boring.  It is tough to watch the NBA and the NHL during the regular season because half of the league makes the Playoffs so they have no reason to try until the Playoffs.  March Madness is usually great.  Then there’s almost an entire baseball season before the NFL starts up again.  I wish the NFL went year round.  They could because they only play once a week anyway.

Redskins decide on Zorn as head coach - Bob Glauber reports that the Redskins decided to hire Jim Zorn as the Head Coach.  Zorn was a Quarterback Coach for the Seahawks for the last 7 years.  Last month, Dan Snyder hired Jim as an Offensive Coordinator about a month ago even though Zorn was underqualified.  Since Snyder was unable to hire somebody with experience to be a Head Coach, Dan promoted Jim to the Head Coach position yesterday.  Also, Zorn was given a 5-year contract.  The Redskins will introduce Jim as their Head Coach in a news conference today.  I love it.  Snyder continues to put his franchise in a position to fail.  Since they are in the NFC East, it doesn’t get any better.  Dan is onto his sixth Head Coach already since he bought the Redskins.  It seems like the Redskins have been an 8-8 team every year since Snyder has bought the team.  I know the Redskins won the NFC East once since Dan bought the team.  So expect this trend to continue.

University of Phoenix StadiumOne week has passed already, and we have to wait one more week till Super Bowl XLII.  How annoying is that?  Well, the Big Blue Wrecking Crew will be flying out to Arizona tomorrow.  Much more will be going on this week than went on last week.  They have to deal with all of the reporters and practice for the big game all week.  Nothing really happens on Saturday, and Sunday will come eventually.  The game will be at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

Snyder driving Redskins’ bus off the road again - Bob Glauber reported that Dan Snyder fired his Defensive Coordinator and Offensive Coordinator yesterday.  On top of the firings, the Redskins promoted Greg Blache to Defensive Coordinator and hired Jim Zorn as Offensive Coordinator.  I heard it on the radio and it made no sense to me because the Redskins still haven’t hired a Head Coach.  Earlier in the week, it seemed like Jim Fassel was going to be named the Coach, but now Dan Snyder said he is still looking for the right guy.  The strange thing is the Head Coach will have no say on who his DC and OC are because Washington already hired them.  This also means that if the Redskins do not have a Coach by next week then they can interview Steve Spagnuolo.

News pits Bill Belichick’s best offense against his best defense - Hank Gola created an interesting scenario in this article where he raises this question: Would Bill Belichick’s best defense (’86 Giants) beat Bill Belichick’s best offense (’07 Patriots)?  Gola asked a number of players on the ‘86 Giants team and included a bunch of quotes.  The only issue was he didn’t include any quotes from Belichick or the ‘07 Pats.  Regardless, this was one of the most well thought out articles I’ve read in years.  Definitely check it out.

Memo to Giants: Shut your Big Blue mouths before the Super Bowl! - I have a big problem with Bob Raissman writing this article.  You can tell what it’s about by the header.  Raissman included a list of five things that the Giants shouldn’t say.  I said that the Giants shouldn’t talk because the media spun things out of control and will give Boston bulletin board material.  Things weren’t even said though.  But, the same newspapers that fabricated stories should not turn around and say don’t talk.

Notes, anecdotes and statistics - Here’s a look at some fun stats about the NFC Championship Game last night between the Giants and the Packers that Michael Eisen put together.  Feel free to read the article for the rest.

The Giants improved to 13-6 and advanced to Super Bowl XLII on Feb. 3 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., where they will face the AFC Champion New England Patriots. The Giants lost to the Patriots, 38-35, in their regular season finale on Dec. 29.

The Giants improved to 4-0 in NFC Championship Games, with victories in 1986, 1990, 2000 and this season. They won the 1990 game at San Francisco and Sunday’s contest on the road and on field goals on the final play of the game. In 1990, Matt Bahr kicked a 42-yarder as time expired. On Sunday, Lawrence Tynes kicked a 47-yarder 2:35 into overtime.

The No. 5 Giants are the lowest-seeded NFC team to reach the Super Bowl since the NFL began seeding teams in 1990.
Prior to their current run, only one NFC team seeded lower than No. 2 had won the conference championship - third-seeded Carolina won in 2003. In the AFC, sixth-seeded Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl two years.

The Giants are just the fourth team since the 1970 merger to reach the Super Bowl after starting the season 0-2. The 1993
Cowboys and the 1996 and 2001 Patriots were the others. The Cowboys and 2001 Patriots won the Super Bowl.

The Giants won their 10th consecutive road game, extending the single-season NFL record they set last week in Dallas. The 10 victories on the road (seven regular season, three postseason) set a single-season record. The Giants had been tied with the 2005 Steelers, who won nine road games (six regular season, three postseason). Yes – the Giants will be the road team in the Super Bowl.

The Giants improved their postseason record to 19-23, including 6-14 on the road. This is the first time in their history that the Giants have won three consecutive postseason road games.

The Giants are 2-4 against Green Bay in the postseason.

The temperature at game time was minus-one degree with winds of 12 miles-an-hour – a wind chill of minus-23. That made it the coldest game in Giants history. The previous coldest game was the 1962 NFL Championship Game – played in Yankee Stadium on Dec. 30, 1962 – when the temperature was 13 degrees with 40 mile-per-hour winds, creating a wind chill of minus-11. Dropping from second to third among the coldest games in franchise history is the 1985 Divisional Playoff in Chicago, where the temperature was 14 with 13 mile-per-hour winds. The wind chill was minus-9 degrees.

The Packers rushed for only 28 yards, the second-lowest total by a Giants opponent this season; Detroit ran for 25 yards on Nov. 18. It was the third-lowest total ever allowed by the Giants in a postseason game. Cleveland ran for 24 yards on Dec. 21, 1958 and Chicago rushed for 27 yards on Jan. 13, 1991.

Tom Coughlin won his first conference championship game on his third try. He lost the 1996 and 1999 AFC title games with Jacksonville.

Eli Manning improved to 3-2 as a starting quarterback in the postseason. He is just the third Giants quarterback to win as many as three postseason games in the Giants Stadium era (since 1976). Phil Simms won six postseason games from 1984 through 1993 and Jeff Hostetler won three in 1990.

Plaxico Burress set a Giants postseason record with 11 receptions, one more than Ike Hilliard had in the 2000 championship game against the Vikings.

McQuarters, who had no interceptions in his first four career postseason games, picked off Favre to give him one in each game this month. Corey Webster, whose pick in overtime set up Tynes’ game-winning field goal, has two.

The Giants’ honorary captains were Harry Carson, the Hall of Fame linebacker who played his entire career for the team from 1976-88, and U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Greg Gadson, who lost both of his legs in May when an IED (improvised explosive device) detonated while he was serving in Iraq. Gadson, a former West Point teammate of receivers coach Mike Sullivan, spoke to the Giants prior to their victory in Washington in September and he attended their Wild Card victory at Tampa Bay two weeks ago.

Redemption - Michael Eisen wrote a piece about how Lawrence Tynes missed two Field Goals in the 4th Quarter and then redeemed himself by nailing the 47-yard FG in OT.

Newsday:

Beating big odds, Eli leads Giants to Super Bowl - Even though Manning didn’t throw any TD passes, he moved the ball on the Packers throughout the game.  He constantly got the offense in position to put up points.  There were some dropped TD passes and some missed Field Goals, but Manning was not the problem.

Burress a towering presence in Giants victory - On top of Plaxico setting the Giants record for receptions in the Postseason, Burress just schooled Al Harris all night long.  They pushing and shoving from beginning to end.  Throughout the game, it was the most entertaining part of it.  Burress was going over to the Packers bench screaming “He can’t stop me”.  I loved it.  He played hard all season on one leg, and he schooled Harris on one leg in the NFC Championship game.  It wasn’t the Plaxico of previous years that gave up on plays long before the whistle blew.  He came through all year.

New York Daily News:

Giants beat Packers in overtime, will battle Patriots in Super Bowl XLII - In case you were in a coma overnight, this pretty much sums it up.

Giants’ overtime victory a TV hit - Why wouldn’t it be?  You had two of the original teams in the NFL play each other in the NFC Championship game.  One of the teams has won the most titles in NFL history, and the other team has won the third most titles in NFL history.  What else do you want?

Back-ups review

Offense:

QB: Jared Lorenzen and Anthony Wright are strong QBs but still need some adjustment with their accuracy

RB: Reuben Droughns, Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw will switch up the pace nicely

FB: Robert Douglas will hopefully recover well and make a great addition

TE: Kevin Boss and Michael Matthewshave been fitting in with the team and with the plays as well

WR: Steve Smith, David Tyree and Anthony Mix are solid back-ups. They’re very well rounded and all have great speed and hands.

OL: Zach Piller, Grey Ruegamer, Guy Whimper and Adam Koets have been doing very well but I feel need better coaching to position themselves.

Defense:

DE: Adrian Awasom has been doing average work and will need to step it up if he wants to be around next year

DT: Barry Cofield, Manny Wright and Jay Alford need an extra push. I can definitely see them becoming successful just need to put extra aggression in their style of playing.

LB: Chase Blackburn, Reggie Torbor, Zak DeOssie and Gerris Wilkinson will be great back-ups. Chase and Reggie are above average compared to Zak and Gerris but we can depend on all our options if need be.

CB: Corey Webster, Kevin Dockery and Aaron Ross are the best additions. Any of these guys can be put in the field starting day and make a hell of a contribution

SS: Michael Johnson and Craig Dahl will do fine. I still believe we need to work on them a little more to compete with top receivers

Overall we have a strong team here. We can depend on some back-ups more than others but I’m sure they will all be watching themselves carefully to better their own skills.

My Thoughts on Giants Loss

August 26, 2007 By: Keith Category: Eli Manning, Jay Alford, Justin Tuck, NFL, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora No Comments →

Last night’s game against the Jets was a tale of two halves.

Defense

First Half: the Giants’ starting defensive unit played a perfect first half last night with the exception of the Pennington to Washington  TD on the Jets’ first play of the game.  On the Jets’ second possession, the Giants were able to stop the Jets before the Jets could pick up a first down.  On 3rd and 6, Justin Tuck sacked Pennington to force the Jets to punt.  It was huge for the Giants to stop them after the Jets scored on their first possession.  On the Jets’ third possession, the G-MEN were able to control the line of scrimmage, make the tackles, and stop the Jets again.  On 3rd and 8, Osi Umenyiora, along with others, sacked Pennington.  This made the Jets punt again.    On the Jets’ fourth possession, the Giants’ defense continued to swarm whoever had the ball like killer bees.  Fred Robbins and Umenyoira were involved in the tackles, and this resulted in another Jets punt.  On the Jets fifth possession, this is where the Giants got the Safety and picked up 2 points on the defensive side of the ball.  On the Jets’ sixth possession, the Giants forced a punt again.  That’s the first half.  It sounds like a broken record of Giants stops.  I couldn’t ask them for anything else except for INTs that are run back for TDs.  Chad Pennington had his second poor Preseason outing.  Another NFC team, the Vikings, just made Pennington look silly last week.

Second Half: the Jets lost yardage on their first possession and had to punt.  This is when the second team couldn’t keep up the momentum that the starters had.  The Jets put Clemens in on their second possession, and he handed it off a ton of times marching his team right into the end zone.  On the Jets’ third possession, Clemens aired it out to lead the Jets to another TD.  On the Jets’ fourth possession, Clemens marched the Jets downfield again, but J.R. Reed got the INT at the 2 yard line to stop the Jets from scoring.  On the the Jets’ third QB, Tuiasosopo, he fumbles the ball from the snap and Jay Alford makes it Giants possession.  On the Jets’ sixth possession, the Giants made the Jets punt again.  Besides Pennington’s first pass and some success by Clemens, the Giants completely manhandled the Jets.  The big penalties declined as well.  That leads to a great outing.

Offense

First Half: the Giants couldn’t pick up a first down on their first possession.  On the second possession, Eli marched the Giants down the field and Tynes missed his 40 YD FG Attempt.  On the Giants’ third possession, Eli led the Giants right down the field again and Tynes missed a 43 YD FG Attempt.  On the Giants’ fourth possession, the Giants were able to move down the field but got stopped and had to punt.  On the Giants’ fifth possession, Eli led the team right down the field again, and Tynes converted on the 40 YD FG Attempt.  How much does all of this seem like the same old Giants that we r
