MojoAs each day passes, I’m trying to figure out all of the advantages that the Giants have on Sunday.  There are some, but there needs to be more.  The number one thing they got right now is their ‘MOJO’.  We need to hope it carries through to the Superbowl.  Say that the Giants are Austin Powers and the Cowboys are Dr. Evil.  We need to hope that Dr. Evil does not take away Austin Powers’ mojo.  Think about it this way.  Do you remember the goal line stand against the Redskins in Week 3?  Sure you do.  Betts was stopped and the Giants got their mojo during that game.  Big Blue went on to win 6 straight before the bye week.  After the bye week, the Cowboys came into the Meadowlands and beat the Giants.  Since then, the Giants lost their mojo.  The Giants won some, lost some since then, but they never won in the same fashion as they did on that 6-game win streak.  Now, the Giants have recaptured their mojo.  So how far will it take them?  I hope Dallas doesn’t take it away again.  They are an offensive machine, but they are not playing like they did in Week 9 either.  The Giants are on a one-game winning streak now, and they only need to win 2 more to make it to the Superbowl.

Transcript: DE Michael Strahan - In Michael Eisen’s interview with Michael Strahan, Eisen asks:

How do you expect Dallas’ offense to change if T.O. can’t play?

He is going to play.  I mean come on.  I have a bridge in Brooklyn, do you want to buy that sucker if you believe he is not going to play?  He is going to play.  The guy came out there three days after breaking a leg and played in the Super Bowl.  He sleeps in a hyperbaric chamber like Michael Jackson, he does all that stuff he needs to do, the guy is going to play in the game, and that is what we are going to prepare for and practice for.  He is not the type of player that if he plays he limits himself so if he is in there expect him to do everything that he always does.

Strahan is always good for a joke.  He brought up Michael Jackson.

Cowboys Scouting Report

Newsday:

Gimpy Burress key to Giants victory

Improved Giants defense itching to get at ‘Boys - I love this title, and I hope it’s backed up on the field on Sunday.

Romo says his focus is on Giants, not Jessica - What else would Romo tell the media?  Wouldn’t it be funny if he said he was focusing on Jessica, not Giants?

Off field, Giants are no match for flashy Cowboys - Who cares?

New York Daily News:

Terrell Owens back at practice

Giants: Terrell Owens will play - I don’t know why everybody keeps writing this story.  Everybody knows that T.O. will play.  It seems like everybody wants to take credit for pointing out the obvious.

Tony Romo: Weekend with Jessica Simpson got me away from distractions

Giants need to focus on Tony Romo, and forget about Jessica Simpson - I don’t understand why the Giants would focus on Jessica Simpson.  This article doesn’t make any sense.

Kevin Boss hopes to fill injured Jeremy Shockey’s shoes - Kevin Boss needs to fill Shockey’s shoes.  Shockey had a great game last time because he overmatched Roy Williams.  As long as Tom Coughlin sees that Boss has good hands in practice, they are going to go to Boss a lot.  They want to take advantage of Williams because he’s far from the best defender on Dallas.

Wade Phillips confident in Cowboys - The Coach should always have confidence in his team.

New York Post:

GIANTS DRAW LINE IN SAND

COUGHLIN: TERRELL WILL PLAY

BIG BLUE: WE HAVE RIGHT MANN FOR JOB

TERSE TONY

New York Times:

Now That Romo Has Rested, Critics Ask if He’s Ready

Cowboys Won’t Say If Owens Will Play

Giants Using Power to Start, and Finesse to Finish - A great article by Bill Pennington.  The article is about the big man Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw.

The Star-Ledger:

Spags must mix it up

Mara withdraws his name from ATL GM search

Injury report (No Boss)

Boss lands in the middle of things for Giants

Romo’s approach not always to the letter

There’s a Jessica for hire; Giants should ante up

CAN WE PROVE OURSELVES?

January 04, 2008 By: phessional Category: Aaron Ross, Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, Corey Webster, Eli Manning, Kevin Boss, NFL, New York Giants, Plaxico Burress, Sam Madison No Comments →

We have not won a Playoff game with Eli Manning, we have not had back-to-back outstanding performance games with Eli Manning, and we’re facing one of the best defensive teams in the NFL.

Of course we’re looking to get at least past the first round.  It has been a curse to us to get a hit in the Playoffs, but not to be able to reach the bowl.  We are going to need a lot from Eli Manning since the Buccaneers have some of the best defenders in the NFL.  It is very obvious that we’ll run the ball more, but I’m hoping this will open up the passing game.  Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Plaxico Burress and even Kevin Boss are tough threats that their defense won’t be able to ignore.  Hoping we can piggy back on the beast (Jacobs) we will finish strong against Tampa.

On the defense side, Jeff Garcia has done so much damage to us throughout the years that we should be lookin to shut him down.  I have more faith on our defense than ever and believe this will be the toughest obstacle for the Bucs.  First of all, Garcia is mobile and he’ll need that talent very much since our defensive line plays with a lot of inspiration.  Our Linebackers should not have a problem reading Garcia since he’ll probably have to focus on short passing like he always does.  My only problem would be the deep pass if Garcia decides to throw it long.  We won’t have Sam Madison but we’ll have Corey Webster and Aaron Ross who will need to prove themselves the most out of the Giants defensive starters.

I feel very strong about this Giants team and hope the drive that gave New England Patriots a hard time is still there for us.  We will need to show superb play execution and excellent play calling to show the remaining teams we have what it takes to get to the Superbowl.  Being realistic, we are a tough team to beat but being recognized as the challengers it’s going to be difficult to get out of that state of mind.  Unbalanced performance has been positive for us but we have not beat the teams we were supposed to beat to gain a stronger recognition.  This Sunday will hopefully change my beliefs about my favorite team and gain the inspiration that drives us in those spectacular games.

Giants vs Tampa Bay in 2 Weeks!

December 24, 2007 By: mrjokah Category: Ahmad Bradshaw, Amani Toomer, Anthony Wright, Brandon Jacobs, Eli Manning, Kevin Boss, NFL, New York Giants, Plaxico Burress, Reuben Droughns, Sinorice Moss, Steve Smith No Comments →

After the Giants huge win yesterday clinched the playoff spot, the Redskins victory over the Minnesota Vikings clinched the Giants the #5 seed overall. The best the Vikings or Redskins can finish is 9-7. With Tampa Bay’s loss they can do no better or worse then the 4th seed, the best record they can finish with is 10-6, but Seattle holds the Tie-Breaker.
So there it is, after many weeks of speculation and concern, the final week does not matter towards the Giants season, and man is that one helluva big relief.
The Giants will take on the Patriots in the regular season finale next Saturday night. As much as I would love to see the Giants thwart the Pats undefeated season on the last game of the season, the G-Men must treat next week like a bye. The Giants have too many banged up players and have lost too many players to injury this season, they can’t afford to lose anyone else.
If I was a betting man I would gamble on Burress and Jacobs not playing a snap. The scintillating rookie Bradshaw getting the majority of carries with Droughns spelling him. Eli, I bet, will play a series or two to continue his games started streak and Toomer will see a handful of plays. For the most part though we are going to see an offense led by Wright or Lorenzen, with Bradshaw in the backfield, Moss and Smith split wide and Boss anchoring the TE spot. Not the lineup you’d expect to knock off the Patriots….
It is also worth noting that if the Giants for some reason did play their starters all game and got waxed by the Patriots that would be an unneccesarry stomach punch leading into the playoffs. The team will be riding high after the win yesterday and will need to carry that momentum into the playoffs, which will be possible if the majority of starters sit next week.

Congrats Giants, the real season begins in two weeks down in Tampa Bay, perhaps the weakest team in the playoffs. What a great Christmas gift this was….Happy Holidays all!

Eli Manning and Peyton ManningI apologize to you all for not writing yesterday.  I’m not feeling well at all, but I feel a notch better today than yesterday.  So we got a HUGE game this Sunday, but it wouldn’t have been if we beat the Redskins.  However, the G-MEN like to make us wait until the last possible second to make the Playoffs (i.e., we clinced the Playoffs in the final game of 2006).  Since it is almost impossible that we beat the mighty Patriots in the final week, this probably is our final shot at making the Playoffs, unless other teams start losing.  Ain’t that something?  I think so.  This one will be on Peyton’s kid brother’s arm.  This is the #1 Draft Pick money shot right here:

WR Hixon’s emotional return - Michael Eisen wrote a story about Domenik Hixon’s return to Ralph Wilson Stadium.  The last time Hixon played there, he took the hit from Kevin Everett that paralyzed Everett’s.  I’ve read that Kevin Everett is supposed to walk out on the field this Sunday.  I can’t wait to see that, and I’m very happy for him because he was able to overcome so much.  Definitely check out this article.

Pro Bowl & Power Rankings

I am quite surprised that only one Giant was elected to the Pro Bowl. I think a case could definitely be made for Burress, Snee, and Strahan. Congrats to Osi for making the team, he should have been a starter not a reserve. Maybe I’m just biased, but appears to me Kerney, Kampman and Osi all have similar stats, with Kerney and Osi leading the way.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion is Fred Taylor being left off of the AFC roster, this guy has been a beast this year when it mattered most to Jacksonville. He carried the team when Garrard was hurt and did this all while splitting time with Jones-Drew. I don’t know how he’s done it but he’s found the fountain of youth.
For a complete listing of the full rosters for both the AFC & NFC go to NFL.com

This weeks Power Rankings from ESPN.com rightfully show our G-Men plummeting from 9th to 12th. Maybe it was the winds fault, but I didn’t see the Redskins dropping 12 passes. 12 freaking passes! My god. And, I did not see journeyman Todd Collins throwing as many ducks as Manning, he had crisp, tight spirals and threw downfield effectively. I predict tough times ahead for our beloved Giants, especially with the loss of Shockey for the year…Kevin Boss anyone?

Osi UmenyioraCongratulations to Osi Umenyiora for being named to the 2007 NFC Pro Bowl team.  I wish more Giants were named.  Five Giants were named as alternates: Plaxico Burress, Jeremy Shockey, Chris Snee, Michael Strahan, and Jeff Feagles.  Too bad they didn’t get selected…

DE Osi Umenyiora named to Pro Bowl - We went from having multiple players being named to the Pro Bowl the past few seasons to just one in 2007.  Congratulations to Osi Umenyiora for being named to the Pro Bowl for the second straight year.  He really does deserve it more than any other Giant.

Newsday:

Wind messes up Eli, blows away Giants’ game plan

Poor coaching set up Manning for failure - I definitely agree with Bob Glauber on this one.  Tom Coughlin had Eli throwing out of desperation way too early.  When the entire offense is out of sync, this is not the best way to win the game.

Notes: With practice bubble deflated, Giants go outdoors - Trust me, this is a good thing.  It will allow Eli to practice throwing outdoors in the wind, and it will allow the receivers to catch the ball in the wind.

New York Daily News:

Tom Coughlin defends passing game - This bothers me because he’s just wrong.  10 points in any conditions are nothing to defend.

SHADES OF BLUE - Mike Vaccarro put together a great piece here.  It is about Yankees/Giants fans and Mets/Giants fans.  Simply put, he describes how the Yankees took command of the lead in the AL East to make the Playoffs, and Yankee fans were confident that it would go down like that.  Meanwhile, the Mets were in first place until the final two days of the season, everything fell apart, and Mets fans were devestated by another let down from a team that claimed that they were ‘too good’ to not win the division.  Vacarro includes quotes from Torre and Randolph, as well as Jeter and Wright, that took place on certain dates to back up his view.  He now uses all of this and relates it to the Giants who can miss the playoffs if they don’t win another game.  Definitely check this article out.  We have one of each writing on this blog: mrjokah would be your Yankees/Giants fan, and I would be your Mets/Giants fan.

Eli ManningThat was FUGLY!!! It keeps getting worse and worse each week, even when they win.  Big Blue dropped to 9-5 for the season and to 3-3 in the second half.  This is the same thing as the past few seasons.  The Giants MUST beat Buffalo, and it’s a good thing that we’re 6-1 on the road.  If we go 1-1 through the AFC East then we’ll end up 10-6.  We only need 1 win to get into the Playoffs.  If we don’t win then we need a combination losses or ties.  Tonight’s MNF game plays into what we need to know so here’s the scenario.  We want Chicago to win this game because it is easier for us to focus on one team than two teams.  If Chicago beats the Vikings then we can clinch with a Saints loss or tie.  If the Vikings beat the Bears then we need a Washington loss or tie AND a New Orleans loss or tie.

TE Shockey placed on IR - This is a season ending injury, and this will definitely hurt an offense that is already having trouble scoring.  We need a weapon like Shockey in the Playoffs.  Jerome Collins will fill the void, and he has two games to show Coach Coughlin what he can do.  If he does a nice job then he’ll get some starts if we make the Playoffs.  I’m a Mets fan so I’m doubting now.

Man, did that game stink. The Giants were flat out beaten by the Cowboys. Hurts to say so, but Dallas fielded the better team Sunday.
Those two holding calls (Boss & Snee) in the 4th were painful, especially the hold by Boss since it had no affect on the outcome of the play, gotta be smarter than that. Let’s not even talk about the clock management issue, what the hell was that about, when did Manning turn into Herm Edwards!?
Putting aside those stupid plays, I still hang this loss on the Defense, just like the first game we couldn’t stop the Cowboys offense when needed. Blown assignments, poor coverage and NO pass rush. The problems with the secondary are a given. All Giants fans I believe have accepted the fact that our secondary is mediocre; however during the 6 game winning streak we put plenty of pressure on the opposing QB’s to help mask this deficiency. As we saw on Sunday when we cannot get pressure on the QB it turns into a long day for our secondary. Hats off to the Cowboys O-line we brought blitzes from every angle yet they still successfully picked them up, Jason Garrett had his team well prepared.

I know there will be a lot of talk about if the Giants didn’t have those boneheaded penalties in the 4th qtr then they would have tied the game 24-24 and it would have been a completely different game. But honestly would it have really? I saw no evidence that the Giants D would all of a sudden turn it around and stone the Cowboys O. The Cowboys offense moved with great ease, but the Giants O? It felt like a struggle all game long to pickup first downs.

The Giants do have the talent to beat the Cowboys and we just may do so if we meet them in the playoffs, but we have to come up with a much better defensive strategy, we need to put pressure on Romo and on the Offensive side of the ball we need to play smash mouth football, eat up the game clock and keep the Cowboys offense off the field, too many times we got away from the run, the Giants, when we are going right, are a run first team…establish the run to setup the play action pass.

It was a disappointing game but lets not panic just yet, lets wait and see how are boys respond next week against a wounded Lions team; 7-3 that doesn’t sound too bad to me at all.
