Thursday’s Giants News: Jints add Danny Clark

March 13, 2008 By: Keith Category: Danny Clark, David Carr, Kevin Dockery, Michael Johnson, Michael Strahan, NFL, New York Giants No Comments →

Danny ClarkFinally, the Giants are making a little splash in Free Agency.  It seemed like Sammy Knight was going to be the only free agent that the G-MEN would add, but now Big Blue signed David Carr and Danny Clark this week.  Carr is a former #1 pick who is going to fight for the backup QB role against Jared Lorenzen and Anthony Wright.  Carr only costed the Giants $1 million.  Danny Clark is going to compete for the outside linebacker position.  The rumors are that Clark got a 2-year deal worth $4 million.  So we have 3 starting linebackers, but the Giants will have to add some depth.  That’s what the Draft is for…

Giants add veteran LB Clark - Michael Eisen reported that the Giants signed Danny Clark and provided a Bio on him.  Eisen also got Tom Coughlin’s and Jerry Reese’s thoughts about Clark.

Danny Clark is a player I drafted a few years ago in Jacksonville,” Coughlin said. “We’re bringing him in as an outside linebacker. He is a very physical, very versatile player. Over the years, he has been a very good special teams player. Clark is a veteran guy with an outstanding work ethic. He will fit in well with our players in the locker room. He will have an opportunity to compete for a position.”

“He is a veteran linebacker who can play all three spots,” general manager Jerry Reese said. “He has been an outstanding special teams player. He is going to create competition in both areas, special teams and at linebacker. He fits the New York Giant mold.”

Giants sign QB David Carr - Michael Eisen reported that the Giants signed David Carr and provided a Bio on him.

Newsday:

Giants’ Strahan still up in air about retirement - Bob Glauber captured Michael Strahan’s thoughts on retirement:

I can’t say I don’t love to play and don’t love to see the guys, but when I see guys like Favre and Sapp and [Chiefs guard] Will Shields, all these guys who are players from my era, say, ‘Enough’s enough’ … Sometimes, you wake up and your body is hurting and you’re thinking, ‘Man, maybe enough is enough.’ You think about it.

New York Daily News:

Giants sign QB David Carr to one-year, $1 million deal

New York Post:

GIANTS DRIVE OFF WITH NEW CARR

New York Times:

Giants Sign Carr to Back Up Manning

The Star-Ledger:

Coughlin finally greases the JAX pipeline

Some extra coin for Johnson, Dockery - Michael Johnson and Kevin Dockery got some extra cash for playing in more games then they were supposed to play in 2007.

Add LB Danny Clark to the roster as well

Big Win for Big Blue

Christmas came early for the Giants this weekend. That game could be called the Miracle on the Lake or something to that affect. After 3 quarters of football the Giants had no business winning the game. Come the 4th quarter however the Giants were a different team playing solid crisp football which just adds to the frustration of why can’t we play a full 4 quarters like this? Costly penalties by the Bears did them in on the first half when they had every chance to blow open the game, but only mounted a 16-7 lead.
Ward kept us in the game early rushing for career highs before leaving the game due to an ankle injury. He was on crutches at the end of the game which does not bode well for next weeks game. Hopefully Jacobs will be able to go in his place. This game of musical chairs with our running backs needs to stop now.
For the first 3 quarters Manning looked in over his head for yet another week. This guy is truly baffling. In the 4th quarter he played much better and was helped out by a great catch in the endzone by Toomer to pull the game within 16-14. On a side note did anyone notice the 180 Aikman pulled in the announcers booth, he was adamant that the play would not be reversed and as soon as it was, he goes well it was clear Amani had his hand sunder the ball…huh? Watching games announced by Buck and Aikman is a truly painful experience for any Giants fan, Buck clearly enjoys rooting against New York teams whether it be the Giants or the Yankees and Aikman time and time again lets something slip where you can still see his Cowboy Blue and Silver coming out. Moose Johnston is a much better announcer who does a better job of holding his personal thoughts in check…Aikman? What a jerk. Ditto for Buck.
Sorry for that little outburst but I needed to vent.
The Defense was phenomenal in the 2nd half and they are the sole reason we were able to pull out this game, Osi, Tuck and Strahan were stellar. Mitchell and Johnson had a couple of huge open field tackels that may have save a couple of TD’s. They placed constant pressure on Grossman and stuffed the running game all game long, we could of used a couple of turnovers but whattya gonna do. At the end of the game I was definitely nervous that we left too much time on the clock, 1:33, and too many timeouts in the Bears’ pocket. I definitely felt the Giants should have ran down the clock on 1st and goal and take a shot on 3rd down for the TD if not kick the field goal with almost no time left giving the Bears basically no shot at winning. Alas, it didn’t matter, Butler knocked down the final pass in the endzone and as the football fell to the ground so did I and I’m guessing so did all of the Big Blue die hards out there. A huge win, now lets get on a roll on our way to the playoffs.

The team is ready to go

Back-ups review

Offense:

QB: Jared Lorenzen and Anthony Wright are strong QBs but still need some adjustment with their accuracy

RB: Reuben Droughns, Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw will switch up the pace nicely

FB: Robert Douglas will hopefully recover well and make a great addition

TE: Kevin Boss and Michael Matthewshave been fitting in with the team and with the plays as well

WR: Steve Smith, David Tyree and Anthony Mix are solid back-ups. They’re very well rounded and all have great speed and hands.

OL: Zach Piller, Grey Ruegamer, Guy Whimper and Adam Koets have been doing very well but I feel need better coaching to position themselves.

Defense:

DE: Adrian Awasom has been doing average work and will need to step it up if he wants to be around next year

DT: Barry Cofield, Manny Wright and Jay Alford need an extra push. I can definitely see them becoming successful just need to put extra aggression in their style of playing.

LB: Chase Blackburn, Reggie Torbor, Zak DeOssie and Gerris Wilkinson will be great back-ups. Chase and Reggie are above average compared to Zak and Gerris but we can depend on all our options if need be.

CB: Corey Webster, Kevin Dockery and Aaron Ross are the best additions. Any of these guys can be put in the field starting day and make a hell of a contribution

SS: Michael Johnson and Craig Dahl will do fine. I still believe we need to work on them a little more to compete with top receivers

Overall we have a strong team here. We can depend on some back-ups more than others but I’m sure they will all be watching themselves carefully to better their own skills.

Giants Love Their Draft Selections

July 27, 2007 By: Keith Category: Adam Koets, Ahmad Bradshaw, Jerry Reese, Michael Johnson, NFL, New York Giants No Comments →

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reported that the Giants now signed Adam Koets, Michael Johnson, and Ahmad Bradshaw. He wrote “The Giants will begin training camp with all eight of their draft choices eligible for action.” The team must feel pretty good about their draft picks if they signed all of them. That’s a good sign. We need to keep an eye on our new GM, Jerry Reese. This year, we will get a feel for how he is in his new role. So Reese will be judged upon his first year’s draft selections.
