Giants Highlights!

October 02, 2007 By: Keith Category: Dave Tollefson, NFL, New York Giants, Robert Douglas No Comments →

The New York Football Giants placed FB Robert Douglas on IR to make room for DE Dave Tollefson.  Tollefson was signed off of the Oakland Raiders’ practice squad.  For more information on him, go to Giants.com.

Big Blue is also bringing in John Huston and Billy Cundiff for tryouts.  Obviously, the Giants don’t have enough confidence in Tynes.  That’s not good news. (NJ.com)

Giants Highlights!

Marquise Gunn, who just made the roster this week, was waived by Big Blue today to make room for FB Robert Douglas.  Douglas was injured in the preseason, was waived by the Giants, was placed on the practice squad and made the team.  Talk about full circle.  This is a good move because the Giants are not using a Full Back to play the position.  Droughns has been splitting time between RB and FB since Douglas was placed on IR. (NJ.com)

Fullback Robert Douglas released

Giants.com

As of yesterday the New York Giants have released fullback Robert Douglas and signedvia a waiver claim Madison Hedgecock.

this isn’t a significant addition since we tend to keep the fullbacks off of our playbook. I hope we can include them more this year to throw off the defenders. It is very important that we use all our weapons and focus on getting everyone involved in plays. We need to rotate our players and give the ball to our fullbacks a little more also. It will be this way that we can keep our asses off the injured list and keep our starters healthy.

Switching it up on run plays will help us in the long run. Especially since Brandon Jacobs oves to blast through and we now know he has a good chance of getting hurt.

The team is ready to go

Back-ups review

Offense:

QB: Jared Lorenzen and Anthony Wright are strong QBs but still need some adjustment with their accuracy

RB: Reuben Droughns, Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw will switch up the pace nicely

FB: Robert Douglas will hopefully recover well and make a great addition

TE: Kevin Boss and Michael Matthewshave been fitting in with the team and with the plays as well

WR: Steve Smith, David Tyree and Anthony Mix are solid back-ups. They’re very well rounded and all have great speed and hands.

OL: Zach Piller, Grey Ruegamer, Guy Whimper and Adam Koets have been doing very well but I feel need better coaching to position themselves.

Defense:

DE: Adrian Awasom has been doing average work and will need to step it up if he wants to be around next year

DT: Barry Cofield, Manny Wright and Jay Alford need an extra push. I can definitely see them becoming successful just need to put extra aggression in their style of playing.

LB: Chase Blackburn, Reggie Torbor, Zak DeOssie and Gerris Wilkinson will be great back-ups. Chase and Reggie are above average compared to Zak and Gerris but we can depend on all our options if need be.

CB: Corey Webster, Kevin Dockery and Aaron Ross are the best additions. Any of these guys can be put in the field starting day and make a hell of a contribution

SS: Michael Johnson and Craig Dahl will do fine. I still believe we need to work on them a little more to compete with top receivers

Overall we have a strong team here. We can depend on some back-ups more than others but I’m sure they will all be watching themselves carefully to better their own skills.

Can Droughns Replace Douglas?

August 28, 2007 By: Keith Category: NFL, New York Giants, Reuben Droughns, Robert Douglas, Tom Coughlin 1 Comment →

Do you think that Reuben Droughns can replace Robert Douglas at the FB position?  Unfortunately, Big Blue doesn’t have a choice in the matter.  I went into the stat sheets, and Douglas had no carries.  However, he did have 3 catches for 21 yards which is an average of 7.0 yards a carry.  That’s pretty good coming out of the backfield.  Droughns’ stats, I’m sure, represent his attempts as a half back rather than as a fullback.  Droughns carried the ball 17 times for 51 yards, which is 3.0 yard per carry.  His longest run was for 7.0 yards.  He, like Douglas, had 3 catches for 25 yards which is 8.3 yards per catch.  His longest catch was for 32 yards, which means that he lost yardage on at least one of the other catches.

When I watched Droughns so far this Preseason, the numbers seem to accurately reflect the story.  I remember him getting his attempts, but I don’t really remember him doing anything positive or negative.  The 3 yards a carry represent just that.  It seemed like he never really went forward and never really went backward.  As a fullback, he is going to get less attempts.  I’m not sure if this is going to help him or make it more difficult for him.

The New York Post got a quote from Tom Coughlin regarding Droughns, “He’s done that before in Denver.  I’d like to see Reuben this week at fullback.”  We’ll have to add this to the list of things we need to pay attention to this season.  Droughns is expected to play Thursday night against the Patriots.  We will get our first glimpse of him at FB then.

Giants Health!

Unfortunately, a longer list of injuries was released.  Here it goes:

  • FB Robert Douglas will miss several weeks due to a torn meniscus, according to NJ.com.
  • WR Plaxico Burress missed today’s practice to have his back evaluated, according to NJ.com.
  • DL Marcus Bell was placed on IR due to a bum knee and this is a season ending injury, according to NJ.com.
  • On a positive note, TE Jeremy Shockey returned to practice today, according to Giants.com.

We hate to see guys get hurt, especially for the entire season.  We hope you all get well soon.  Reuben Droughns practiced as a Fullback today in place of Robert Douglas.
