Giants Training Camp Report: 8/3

August 03, 2008 By: Keith Category: Aaron Ross, Amani Toomer, Andre' Woodson, Anthony Wright, Brandon London, Chase Blackburn, Corey Webster, Craig Dahl, Craphonso Thorpe, Danny Clark, David Carr, David Tyree, Domenik Hixon, Eli Manning, Gerris Wilkinson, Justin Tuck, Kevin Boss, Kevin Dockery, Mario Manningham, Michael Jennings, NFL, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora, Plaxico Burress, R.W. McQuarters, Sam Madison, Shane Olivea, Sinorice Moss, Steve Smith, Terrell Thomas, Zak DeOssie No Comments →

The Giants had to go back to work today, unfortunately. Below you will find a bunch of notes and reports assembled by a variety of beat writers. The Giants play their first game on Thursday so make sure you watch it.

The Star-Ledger

  • Since Plaxico Burress has been unable to practice, he is contributing as an adviser to the Giants’ young receivers. Plax is taking on the mentor role even if the young guys don’t ask for it.
  • Mike Garafolo assembled an in-depth 8/3 morning practice report worth checking out. Below is a sample of the entire report. There’s much more where that came from so go check out the source.
    • DEs Justin Tuck (foot) and Osi Umenyiora (hip), WRs Plaxico Burress (ankle), Amani Toomer (leg), Mario Manningham (groin) and David Tyree (knee/PUP), LBs Zak DeOssie (back) and Gerris Wilkinson (knee/PUP), CB Sam Madison (sports hernia), RT Shane Olivea and S Craig Dahl (knee) did not practice.
    • There we go again: first play of team drills was a bomb. Again from QB Eli Manning to WR Domenik Hixon. Great tackle on the play by CB Aaron Ross. Too bad it was way before the ball got there. That’s a 40-yard pass interference penalty on Ross.
    • QB Anthony Wright and WR Michael Jennings hooked up for deep in.
    • WR Craphonso Thorpe got the crowd excited with a spinning, toe-tapping catch on a fade to the left side from Wright. Dockery was in coverage on the play.
    • Hall ran a nice route to catch a hook from QB Andre’ Woodson in front of Webster. Hall later went deep on Pope, but the ball from Wright was overthrown and out of bounds.
  • Mike Garafolo assembled an in-depth 8/3 evening practice report also worth checking out. Below is a sample of the entire report. There’s much more where that came from so go check out the source.
    • WRs Plaxico Burress (ankle), Steve Smith (groin), David Tyree (knee/PUP) and Mario Manninghan (groin), LBs Gerris Wilkinson (knee/PUP) and Danny Clark (sports hernia), CB Sam Madison (sports hernia) and OT Shane Olivea (back) did not practice..
    • CB Corey Webster would have none of WR Domenik Hixon catching a fade on the left side. He stayed all over Hixon and knocked the ball away. Webster also stayed stride for stride on a go from QB David Carr to WR Sinorice Moss. Webster had such good position it almost looked like he was the intended receiver. Webster knocked it away for a PD.
    • Hixon ran a perfect comeback to get separation from CB R.W. McQuarters and make a diving catch. McQuarters bounced back with a PD a few plays later when WR Craphonso Thorpe ran the same pattern.
    • LB Chase Blackburn keeps making plays. I mean, this guy couldn’t get a job after the draft a few years ago and now he’s a steady backup in my mind. Tonight, he stayed with Boss on a post into the end zone and wrestled with him to grab a ball from Wright for an INT.
    • WR Brandon London made his first nice grab in a few days on a skinny post over CB Kevin Dockery. Not a bad ball at all from Woodson. London then did a great job of accelerating to at least get his hands on a deep incompletion from Manning. The ball was overcooked and I didn’t think London had a prayer of getting there, but he dove and almost made the catch after getting past CB Terrell Thomas.
  • Plaxico Burress did some light running for the first time since training camp.

Big Blue Blog

  • Paul Schwartz assembled his own morning practice notes. Below is a sample of his notes, but there are not too many more.
    • On Manning’s second pass, Ross made another aggressive play, storming in to bat away a pass in the flat. Unfortunately for Ross, the ball was picked out of the air by RB Derrick Ward for a completion.
    • David Carr could not have thrown a better pass on a deep toss to Sinorice Moss, who had a step on two rookies, S Kenny Phillips and CB Terrell Thomas. The ball floated down perfectly to Moss … who watched as it slid right through his arms and to the grass. Moss looked up to the sky in bewilderment.
    • TE Kevin Boss, who has caught virtually everything thus far in camp, could not make the grab on a lunging attempt from Manning over the middle.

Inside the Giants

  • Tom Rock believes that Sinorice Moss is basically playing for his Giants career in this camp so he’s been under the microscope this first week and a half. That means every drop is written about, and to be fair, there have been a lot of them. Moss had a pretty good practice tonight.

David Tyree at Safety? If Not Then Who?

March 20, 2008 By: Keith Category: Aaron Ross, Corey Webster, David Tyree, James Butler, NFL, New York Giants, R.W. McQuarters, Sammy Knight No Comments →

David TyreeI just came across a very interesting article over at the Giants Blog on LoHud.com.  Ernie Palladino is trying to figure out who is going to play Safety for the Giants in ‘08.  Palladino expects Sammy Knight to play in the place of Gibril Wilson.  However, Ernie doesn’t know about the other side.  Palladino stated that he read a lot of theories about what could take place, but he didn’t provide his sources.  Here’s some of what he said could happen:

  • Aaron Ross drops back to Safety.
  • Move David Tyree to Safety.
  • Corey Webster drops back to Safety.
  • R.W. McQuarters drops back to Safety.

Ernie does not believe that Ross will play Safety because he’s only going into his second year and why mess around with a good thing.  Palladino thinks that Tyree would play the position if asked because Tyree is a team guy and plays on Special Teams and Wide Receiver, but Tyree would be like a rookie back there as a Safety.  Ernie doesn’t feel comfortable with Sammy Knight and James Butler back there, and he doesn’t really like the other suggestions that he read about so he says that the Giants should just draft a Safety and develop him “ala Michael Johnson”.

For the most part, I agree with Palladino’s perspective.  I would leave Ross where he is because he’s young and played his position really well as a Rookie.  After watching Tyree play so well on the Special Teams unit, I always thought he would’ve been a better receiver than he has been.  In Super Bowl XLII, Tyree was so effective because of the ‘element of surprise’ rather than his receiver skills.  I’m sure that the Patriots were not studying film about Tyree catching a touch down in the Super Bowl or making the greatest catch in Super Bowl history even though Tyree is listed as a Wide Receiver.  I would want to know if Tyree can tackle if he was going to play defense.  As far as moving the other Corners to Safeties, that doesn’t sound like such a bad idea to me as long as the Giants have depth at both positions.  Drafting a Safety also doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me if the Giants signed somebody high in the first or second round like they did with Ross last year.  Ross was able to make a big impact in his first year, after getting Star Struck in Big D in Week 1.

On the road to Super Bowl XLII, it was very evident that the old dogs like Madison and McQuarters were able to teach the young guys in the secondary how to stop guys like Galloway, Owens, Driver, and Moss.  Madison and McQuarters were injured in some of those games, but their knowledge of the game cannot be overlooked.  Hopefully Knight and McQuarters can do the same thing in ‘08, especially if the Giants are drafting a rookie or are going to drop a corner back to safety.

Giants Victory Parade

Since the New York Giants won Super Bowl XLII, New York City held a Ticker Tape for them up the Canyon of Heroes at 11:00 a.m. on February 5, 2008.  It officially began at 11:10 a.m.

The Giants began walking through the Canyon of Heroes with the George Halas Trophy and the Lombardi Trophy.  Various floats full of Giants went through the Canyon of Heroes as 50 tons of confetti came falling down from the sky.  Giants players had their video cameras and were filming it.  The Giants donned their Super Bowl Champion hooded sweatshirts.  Mayor Bloomberg jumped up onto a float with Eli Manning and Michael Strahan who were holding the Lombardi Trophy.  Marching bands came up Broadway.  Governor Spitzer and Senator Schumer came up Broadway in a car.  John Tisch was on a Gray Line bus.  The Giants fans were screaming and chanting the whole time.  One of the chants was “18-1″.  A float came up Broadway with Steve Spagnuolo and Kevin GilbrideDavid Diehl came off the float and said “it was an unbelievable experience”.  Kareem McKenzie also came off the float and said that Giants fans are the “greatest fans in the world, they cheer for you”.  Other chants were “Defense, Defense, Defense” as floats came out with defensive players.  Justin Tuck said “This is crazy, I never heard of anything like this, the fans scream your name, and it’s amazing.  It’s amazing, I’m lost for words, I’ve been doing this for miles, and this is ridiculous”.  Antonio Pierce said “It’s amazing, we need to do this Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, every day of the year.  We didn’t do the impossible.  It’s beautiful that everybody came out so early in the morning.  Don’t stop celebrating.  Tell your boss we’re going to party all week.”  Barry Cofield and Fred Robbins got off the float and hi-fived the fans.  Barry Cofield said “it’s unbelievable.  I never expected anything close to this”.  The fans started chanting “Boston Sucks”.  Antonio Pierce said “It’s the best thing in the world.  All these people came to support us.  This is for the fans of New York.”  Plaxico Burress got up on a float with Gibril WilsonGibril Wilson said ‘It’s crazy right now.  It’s great to see all these people out here”.  R.W. McQuarters said “It gets no better than this.  This is the best thing I’ve ever seen.”  Jeff Feagles and Lawrence Tynes came out on the next float.  Lawrence Tynes said “It is beyond his expectations.  It’s unbelievable.  I was a piece of the puzzle, and it feels good to contribute.”  John Tisch said “I’m a life long New Yorker.  One of the greatest things is seeing New York embrace this team.  And the fans all came here to say thank you.  This is a team of the people.  It’s fabulous, just fabulous.”  Harry Carson by phone said “I really agreed with John Mara.  It was the most historical franchise win for the Giants.  They came through.  They did New York and New Jersey fans well.  I’m watching the parade.  I’m currently in Hawaii.  I’m really impressed with who’s there.  It’s so appropriate that they have a ticker tape parade in New York.”

The City Hall Ceremony began around 1:00 p.m.  Whoopi Goldberg came out first because Mayor Bloomberg invited her there.  She gave an introduction.  The radio voice of the New York Giants, Bob Papa, came up next.  He gave a short speech, and introduced Mayor Bloomberg and other NYC officials and Meadowlands officials, Senator Schumer, Elliot Spitzer, Shelly Silver.  Then he introduced the World Champion New York Football Giants.  Speakers included Bob Papa, Governor Spitzer, Senator Schumer, Coach Coughlin, Speaker Silver, John Mara, Steve Tisch, Michael Strahan, and Eli Manning.

Every Giant received a key to the city.  New York City did a wonderful job with the Victory Parade and the City Hall Ceremony.  Hundreds of thousands of Giants fans were going crazy.  It was great to see all of that.

University of Phoenix StadiumSuper Bowl Weekend is creeping up on us.  It reality, these two weeks have seemed like forever and it isn’t even over yet.  I’d rather the NFL went back to playing one week after the Conference Championship game.  So much of nothing has occured.

People have continued to bet on the Jints, so the Giants are a 12 point underdog again rather than a 12 1/2 point underdog.  I still don’t see this game getting out of hand.  In Week 17, it was a shut out.  Neither team played good defense so I do think both teams will play better defense.  In the Playoffs, the Giants did not allow an excessive amount of points in any game.  Tampa Bay wasn’t a potent offense anyway so that doesn’t count.  Dallas was the 2nd most prolific offense this season and they did nothing.  Green Bay was a pretty high scoring team that put up 20 points.  So I do believe that both the Patriots and the Giants will play better defense than Week 17 because it’s the Super Bowl.

Osi said he’s going to shut up, he apologized, and said he loved Matt Light.  What is that about?  Osi punked out.  This story is the reason why you should just say nothing.  Osi said Light was dirty, and now has to mend the issue.  It looks stupid so if you never say anything then you won’t look like a punk.

Sunday’s Giants News

Lawrence TaylorHistorically, the Jints are 3-0 in NFC Championship games.  They shut out the Redskins 17-0 in 1987, they beat the Joe Montana led 49ers 15-13 in 1991, and they blanked the Vikings 41-0 in 2000.  In the 1990 season, the Niners were like that Patriots are now, and Big Blue kept them to 13 points.  In 1999, the Vikings put up the most points ever during the season and the G-MEN shut’em out.  This season, the Patriots broke the 1999 Vikings records.  Randy Moss was a huge part of each team.  Giving up 13 points in 3 Championship is pretty damn good.  So of course they will be 4-0 later, right?  I hope so, but the Giants are 1-4 against the Packers in the Playoffs going back to 1938.  The Giants only beat the Packers the first time they faced each other in the Playoffs in 1938.  I believe, do you?

Newsday:

Which version of Favre will show up? - Favre is do for a 3 pick game.  Especially after last week’s comeback over the Seahawks.  Once the Giants take the early lead, Favre will attempt to make it up in one play just like he always does.  The D-Line of the Giants will also make Favre have to throw faster than he wants.  So, the Giants will win this one.

Giants’ Manning won’t wear glove on throwing hand - There has never been any indication that Eli would wear a glove on his throwing hand.  I don’t know how Newsday made an article about a topic without a basis to support it.

Ron Jaworski sees a big improvement in Giants - I find it odd that Jaws just realized this.  Skip the article however because his analysis doesn’t even make sense.  At one point when he was being really specific, he pointed out a play when the Giants played the Cowboys in Week 2…we all know that never occured.  If Jaws cannot get his facts right then Newsday shouldn’t publish it.

jerry-jones.jpgThe nail bitter of a game yesterday, was the best Giants game I’ve seen since the Giants beat the Bills in Superbowl XXV.  And this team is beginning to look a lot like the 1990 team.  Is Tom Coughlin going to be able to out coach Bill Belichick as well as Bill Parcells out coached Marv Levy?  T.C. has to in order to come out victorious.  And then to be able to see the organization that I hate the most deflate.  Jerry Jones‘ face after the game was priceless.  The player in the NFL that I hate the most, T.O., was crying and that was priceless (To see the video, click here).  The fact that their fans shut their arrogant mouths is priceless.

Upon Further Review - Michael Eisen put together a piece about how much the Jints support Eli Manning.

Transcript: Coach Tom Coughlin - Michael Eisen discusses the NFC Championship game with Tom Coughlin.

Notes, anecdotes and statistics - Here’s some of the great game stats provided by Michael Eisen.

The Giants won their ninth consecutive road game (seven regular season, two postseason). They are the first team in NFL history to win nine consecutive road games in a single season. In addition, the Giants have set a franchise record for overall consecutive road victories.

The Giants are the first team to defeat the NFC’s No. 1 seed in the divisional round since the current postseason format (six teams from each conference) was adopted in 1990.

Dallas was the NFL’s second-highest scoring team in the regular season with 455 points, or 28.4 per game. They had scored 247 points in the second half, 130 in the fourth quarter. The Giants held the Cowboys to 17 points, including three in the second half and none in the fourth quarter.

Manning completed 12 of 18 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns to Toomer. Manning’s rating of 132.4 was the highest of his 61-game career (47 regular season, four postseason). His previous best was a 130.0 rating vs. Philadelphia on Nov. 20, 2005. His best postseason rating had been the 117.1 he recorded last week at Tampa Bay.

Toomer caught four passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns and set another franchise postseason record. Toomer has a team-high 11 catches this playoff season to increase his career total to 32. That moved him past Mark Bavaro (30) and into first place on the franchise’s career postseason list.

Transcript: Cowboys QB Tony Romo - Here’s what Tony Romo had to say about the Giants after the game, “I felt like they were the toughest team. I told guys all year that I felt like we’d see them again. They were the toughest team we faced this year, besides New England.”  That’s respect.

Transcript: Cowboys Head Coach Wade Phillips

Transcript: Cowboys WR Terrell Owens

Newsday:

Giants upset Cowboys to reach NFC title game

Defense is Giant when it counts - The Giants couldn’t stop Marion Barber for their lives in the first half.  This whole situation worked out well for the Giants.  Wade Phillips decided to start Barber for the first time ever.  Barber gave it his all in the first half, and then he ran out of gas because he never played an entire NFL game.  Starter Julius Jones only got 3 touches in the game.

Owens tears up after loss to Giants - Priceless moments.  There were a few of them yesterday.  T.O. cried like a chick yesterday after the loss.  He backed up his quarterback before the reporters even asked him about it.  He said that he always backs his quarterbacks, as he was crying, and I found that to be a Priceless moment.  This guy is such a bum.  I don’t understand how anybody can root for somebody that is so arrogant and crazy.  Another moment was watching Jerry Jones come down to the Cowboys bench with a whole lot of clock left like he was ready to light up a victory cigar.  Once the clock ran out, FOX got a shot of Jones’ face and it was priceless.  Jones is as arrogant as T.O.  The fans are as arrogant as the Owner.  Owners should not be on the field until the game is over.  All of that was after Jones handed out tickets to the team for the NFC Championship game before the game even started.  It’s a disgusting organization to be associated with.  The players were talking smack all week, and the Giants took the high road.  When the game ended, Strahan said that they can eat their popcorn sitting on their couches watching the Giants play the Packers on their plasma tvs.  Remember what I wrote yesterday?  I wrote that I hate losing to the Cowboys because all of their fans talk so much smack, but where are they today?  I heard a Packers fan call WFAN this morning, and he was as extatic as I was, that he would rather see the Packers lose to the Giants than the Cowboys.

Strange but true: Giants one win from Super Bowl - When you go back to the beginning of the Playoffs, it was a long shot as a 5 seed.  Now, Big Blue is only one win away.  They have a 50/50 shot at going to the Superbowl now.  They have every reason to lay it all on the line next week regardless of the elements.  Does anybody remember the 6 Seed Pittsburgh Steelers?  The only difference is that the Giants have to beat the almight Patriots, and the Steelers only had to beat a soft Seahawks team.  But at least we know that we only lost by 3 points to the Patriots.  Since both teams played at full strength, both Coaches will have everything on tape to prepare for the game.

Ol’ Reliable Toomer has two TD catches - Props to Amani Toomer for stepping up big time.  He had no intention of simply picking up first downs yesterday.  You could tell that he was trying to take every catch to the house.

Grading the Giants - Arthur Staple handed out good grades this week, but the G-MEN deserve it.  The 5 seed knocked out the 1 seed.  The team with one lonely Pro Bowler eliminated the team with 12 Pro Bowlers.

Q&A: Webster helped corner keep its edge - Props to Corey Webster for shutting down Joey Galloway last week and only getting burned once by T.O. this week.  Actually, he also dropped that ball that Romo threw into his stomach.  It could’ve been a lot worse.  He stepped up big time.

Pope, McQuarters step in and step up - Props to R.W. McQuarters for sealing the deal two weeks in a row.

Eli and Giants offense protect ball again

New York Daily News:

Eli Manning, Giants beat Cowboys; will play Packers for NFC championship

On day Peyton Manning gets sacked, Eli delivers on Giant promise - Most NFL fans expected to see the Peyton Manning led Colts against the Patriots next Sunday.  We’ve all been looking forward to it, but it isn’t happening.  Does anybody care about San Diego?  I know I don’t.  They lack a whole lot of class.  Have you seen Phillip Rivers whining and screaming at his teamates and his fans all season?  Thank God we have Eli.  I would never want our franchise Quarterback to act like that.  Then you had to watch Merriman on steroids sacking Peyton Manning on Saturday.  These guys should be banned from the sport.  Do you remember last season when LT called out the Patriots and said that they disrespected his team by doing Merriman’s dance?  LT said he is too classy that he doesn’t do the dances.  So why is he defending his teamate who does a dance?  If you don’t like the dances call your teamate out.  If you don’t like what the Patriots did then win the game.  This whole team whines and whines like Gary Sheffiled and Terrell Owens.  I hope that the Patriots win the game so we can man up to them and take them down ourselves in the Superbowl to make them 18-1.  That’s right, I said it.  I know I originally picked a Giants vs. Colts Superbowl, but that’s not happening.

Giant defense makes huge play - They made a bunch of them.  The Jints only gave up 17 points to the 2nd best offense in the NFL.  The G-MEN won that game on heart alone.  It was like Rocky IV.  ‘You know how big he is.  You know how strong it is.  You can’t win’.  This season is like a free shot at the Superbowl for the New York Giants.  I remember multiple media sources saying that the Giants would finish in last place in the NFC East.  SNY is one them that I wrote a post about right before the season began if you want to go back and check it out.  I said that they would go 11-5 which is a gutsy move by me, but that wasn’t the perception at the time.  So if the Giants have a shot at the Superbowl when they were supposed to be in last place, lay it all out there.  Do you remember 2000 when the Giants were 12-4?  They were the favorite, and got smoked in the Superbowl by the Ravens.  Tom Coughlin must get this team to understand what’s at stake.  There are plenty of young bucks on the team that need to understand how far they’ve come, and how close they are to achieving the dream.

Giants send Tony Romo to offseason - Who cares?  He started his vacation before the Cowboys lost.

Giant ‘D’ never rests against Tony Romo - The Giants ‘D’ got stronger by the quarter.

Patrick Crayton’s drops lift Giants - HAHAHA…the Cowboy talking the most smack all week dropped the biggest pass of the game.  His name…is Patrick Crayton, and he would’ve taken that ball to the house if he didn’t talk so much smack all week.  Remember him forever.

Terrell Owens all choked up over Dallas’ flop, doesn’t blame Tony Romo

‘BOYS BURIED BY BIG BLUE

TRUE SECONDARY CONCERN - It’s definitely a concern.  Some status’ haven’t been released yet.  Yesterday, they stepped up big though.  Aaron Ross was a stud.  He didn’t miss a tackle, he was in so much pain that he had to go in and out of the game.  On his final play, he saved a touch down by hitting Marion Barber with his sore shoulder to take Barber down.  McQuarters saved the day at the end of the game.  I thought that the Giants were going to call me to play Safety.  It was like in 2006 when the Giants were taking linebackers off the streets as they headed into the Playoffs.

AMANI SPLENDORED THING

LITTLE BROTHER ELI COMES UP BIG - Yesterday, the Manning family had to split up to watch both sons play on the same day.  Mom went with Eli, and Dad went with Peyton.  Looks like everybody will be heading up to Green Bay this week.

TEARS FROM T.O. - Why was T.O. really crying?  Was he pissed off that he realized that they would’ve won a Superbowl if Bill Parcells was still around.  There is no way The Tuna would’ve let the team take a vacation one week before the Divisional Playoffs when the organization is in an 11-year drought and the Quarterback never won a Playoff game.  The Tuna also realized that ‘me’ players like T.O. cannot help you win a championship.  T.O. needs to be pampered.

GIANTS HOPE REVENGE IS SERVED COLD - In the first two weeks of the season, the Giants were 0-2, and allowed 80 points to the Cowboys and the Packers.  The Giants already took revenge for the Cowboys.  Now, it’s time that Big Blue takes revenge for the Packers.  And last, it’s time we took revenge for New England.

The Star-Ledger:

Injury (non)updates - That’s great news.  I believe we only reported no injuries once all season.

Now the defense can rest

T.O. turns Terribly Overemotional

Defense had Romo on run

Manning quiets critics - And I’m his biggest critic.  I disowned him after the Buffalo game.  Remember this though, he had 5 fumbles (losing 2) and 2 INTs.  And that was in a game where they didn’t let Eli throw the ball and the running backs ran for 296 yards.  If they lost that game because of those turnovers, and if the Giants lost by 3 to the Patriots, then they wouldn’t be here now to see Eli play like this.  And that would be a shame for a team that could go all the way.
