The BotchI still feel like the Giants need to stop talking.  They aren’t really saying anything wrong, but the media has been spinning it out of control.  On Thursday night, the Rangers retired Brian Leetch’s number, and the local press took what Plaxico Burress said about the Patriots’ receivers and put it on the back page after fabricating the story.  That’s what the Giants have to deal with.  So Brian Leetch didn’t end up on the back page after a Hall of Fame career with the Rangers, but Plaxico did for complementing the Pats and saying that the Giants’ receivers can play with them.  If the Giants say nothing then there won’t be any problems.  The media should be ashamed of themselves, but that will never happen.

Corey WebsterIs it Sunday yet?  I wish.  I’d even take Saturday right now knowing that two games are on.  I am a bit concerned about the big play ability of the Cowboys.  I can see the Giants trying to put as many points as possible early.  I can also see them taking the lead.  I can also see the Cowboys starting out slow after the miserable month that they’ve had, and then start clicking, and give up the lead to the Cowboys like what happened a few years ago against the 49ers.  All week, I’ve been listening to people say that Romo is like a better version of Garcia.  If that’s the case then Romo can hook up with T.O. like Garcia hooked up with Romo.  Big Blue cannot give up the big plays.  The secondary has to step up and stop all of their weapons which are much more than there were in Tampa Bay last week.

New York Daily News:

Lack of respect fuels Giants - It seems like they are getting some respect.  I’ve been listening to radio shows all week.  Most football people feel like if there is a road upset this week, it would be the Giants beating the Cowboys.  So that is more respect than Seattle, Jacksonville, and San Diego is getting.

MojoAs each day passes, I’m trying to figure out all of the advantages that the Giants have on Sunday.  There are some, but there needs to be more.  The number one thing they got right now is their ‘MOJO’.  We need to hope it carries through to the Superbowl.  Say that the Giants are Austin Powers and the Cowboys are Dr. Evil.  We need to hope that Dr. Evil does not take away Austin Powers’ mojo.  Think about it this way.  Do you remember the goal line stand against the Redskins in Week 3?  Sure you do.  Betts was stopped and the Giants got their mojo during that game.  Big Blue went on to win 6 straight before the bye week.  After the bye week, the Cowboys came into the Meadowlands and beat the Giants.  Since then, the Giants lost their mojo.  The Giants won some, lost some since then, but they never won in the same fashion as they did on that 6-game win streak.  Now, the Giants have recaptured their mojo.  So how far will it take them?  I hope Dallas doesn’t take it away again.  They are an offensive machine, but they are not playing like they did in Week 9 either.  The Giants are on a one-game winning streak now, and they only need to win 2 more to make it to the Superbowl.

 All eyes on defense

Transcript: C Shaun O’ Hara

Transcript: DE Michael Strahan - In Michael Eisen’s interview with Michael Strahan, Eisen asks:

How do you expect Dallas’ offense to change if T.O. can’t play?

He is going to play.  I mean come on.  I have a bridge in Brooklyn, do you want to buy that sucker if you believe he is not going to play?  He is going to play.  The guy came out there three days after breaking a leg and played in the Super Bowl.  He sleeps in a hyperbaric chamber like Michael Jackson, he does all that stuff he needs to do, the guy is going to play in the game, and that is what we are going to prepare for and practice for.  He is not the type of player that if he plays he limits himself so if he is in there expect him to do everything that he always does.

Strahan is always good for a joke.  He brought up Michael Jackson.

Giants: Terrell Owens will play - I don’t know why everybody keeps writing this story.  Everybody knows that T.O. will play.  It seems like everybody wants to take credit for pointing out the obvious.

Tony Romo: Weekend with Jessica Simpson got me away from distractions

Giants need to focus on Tony Romo, and forget about Jessica Simpson - I don’t understand why the Giants would focus on Jessica Simpson.  This article doesn’t make any sense.

Kevin Boss hopes to fill injured Jeremy Shockey’s shoes - Kevin Boss needs to fill Shockey’s shoes.  Shockey had a great game last time because he overmatched Roy Williams.  As long as Tom Coughlin sees that Boss has good hands in practice, they are going to go to Boss a lot.  They want to take advantage of Williams because he’s far from the best defender on Dallas.

Sweet VictoryNow that felt good! It’s been a longtime coming for our Giants, but our boys have finally won a playoff game. It was a throwback of sorts to the glory days of the eighties and nineties. Eli looked like Simms out there, took what the D gave him and played smart. The Giants didn’t abandon a running game that struggled in the 1st quarter and the Defense was everywhere.

While the Giants winning this game was great, we need to make sure not to get too ahead of ourselves as fans. The Bucs were the perfect match-up for the Giants on paper, as I’ve mentioned many times before the Giants own teams who rely on the running game and work the pass from there, the teams that do give the Giants trouble are those who spread the field and have physical receivers. Joey Galloway is far from a physical receiver with or without a nagging shoulder injury. The Bucs gameplan played straight into the strengths of this Giants team and the Giants D had no trouble derailing them. The Giants were relentless in their pass rush knocking down Garcia time and time again (how great was it to see that!?).

On the offensive side of the ball, what can you say, Manning was great, the running game was solid, the receivers ran crisp routes and I only think there was 1 dropped pass all game! But the unsung hero(s) as is usually the case was the Giants O-line. With O’Hara out, I was concerned this could lead to all types of problems for the line, but they were stellar against the speedy Bucs D. The line kept pressure off of Eli all game long and gave him time to complete 20 of 27 pass attempts. Think how many pump fakes Eli employed during the game (A la the Game clincher to Toomer, who had a great game as well), if the Bucs were getting pressure, no chance he would have had the time to successfully complete those passes. When Eli has time he shows why he was the #1 overall pick, when he doesn’t…what was the term Reese used to describe Eli(?) I believe “Skittish” was it. The running game was the real deal, exactly what we needed against a tough Bucs Defense. The switch to Bradshaw in the 2nd half, may have been the best coaching call of the season. Jacobs was not having much success mainly because of the speed of the Bucs D, they were getting to the hole and edges at the same time as Jacobs, Bradshaw with his speed was hitting those holes faster and in turn was netting more yards. They are a great one-two punch to deploy going forward this season and next.

Next week it’s time for the Cowboys; the Cowboys O-Line man-handled the Giants D-Line last time they played. When the G-Men can’t get pressure on the QB we cannot mask our deficiencies in the secondary. To beat the Cowboys we must pressure Romo. If we are unable to it will be a long day for the Giants, but if the NFL leaders in Sacks can do what they do best we can win this game. As Howie Long mentioned during the Postgame Show yesterday, 53 times teams have played each other 3 times in the same season, only 11 times has a team won all 3 matchups…I love that statistic, feed me more just like it.

Newsday:

With injuries, Webster rises anew on depth chart - Arthur Staple noted that Sam Madison is listed as doubtful for tomorrow’s game, and Corey Webster will most likely get the start.

Giants’ Mitchell braces for some playing time - Arthur Staple reported that Kawika Mitchell is now listed as questionable for tomorrow’s game.  Also, remember the play against the Patriots when Vince Wilfork stuck his finger in Brandon Jacobs’ eye and it wasn’t called?  Well, ”Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork was fined $15,000 by the NFL on Friday for poking a finger inside the facemask of Brandon Jacobs Dec. 29. Wilfork was not penalized on the play. It was the third time he had been fined this season. - AP”

O’Hara, Mitchell & Madison

January 03, 2008 By: mrjokah Category: Gerris Wilkinson, Kawika Mitchell, Mathias Kiwanuka, NFL, New York Giants, Reggie Torbor, Sam Madison, Shaun O'Hara No Comments →

O’Hara, Mitchell, & Madison all have not practiced yet this week.  Which is no surprise seeing as it is only Thurs morning.  This being the playoffs and all I’m sure the Giants will be coy releasing any ‘real’ information about the status of any players.  Hopefully all 3 will be able to play come Sunday, we need all of them on the field.  I was trying to decide who we need to play the most or who we could afford to have sit this game of the three and it’s an extremely tough decision.  Seeing as we have the most depth at LineBacker, I’d say we can make do without Mitchell the best, but you have to remember we are already playing without one starting linebacker, Kiwanuka,  & Mitchell has made some huge plays during the season…fielding two back-ups in the playoffs is far from ideal.  Yet Torbor and Wilkinson have looked good in the games they played and Tampa is not a fierce offense.  Using the same logic about the Tampa offense makes one believe that we could get by without Madison as the only receiving threat on the team is Galloway.  Yet we all know the struggles the Giants have had this year in the secondary, remember Todd Collins and Tarvaris Jackson anybody?

With all that said, I feel we need O’Hara out there more then the other two players, he is the anchor on the O-line.  The centers job is to call out the assignments for the rest of the O-line, I don’t think I want a backup in there doing that in a game of this magnitude.  The O-line that is made up of solid players and no stars, a group that has played a few years together, that chemistry just cannot be replaced and especially come playoff time against the number 1 defense in the league.

Here’s hoping all three can play come Sunday and knowing the how secretive coaches get during the time of year, I’m sure we all won’t know for sure until - Sunday 1 PM EST - GAME TIME!

Eli ManningHappy New Year to all you Die Hard Giants Fans!  2008 has creeped up on us, and we have a big game this weekend against the Bucs to kick off the New Year.  Is 2008 the year of Eli Manning?  Will Eli get past the first round of the Playoffs?  Will he be able to get further and further into the Playoffs each year like Peyton did?  I sure hope so.

Giants Stats Review - Michael Eisen points out interesting stats for the 2007 season.

Newsday:

Giants playoff moment - Newsday relives a playoff moment in 1985 between the Giants and the 49ers.

Bucs QB Garcia has been a thorn in Giants’ side - Tell me about it…How does Garcia keep getting to the Playoffs?  He didn’t do that when he was the starter of the 49ers.  He only did it at the end of his term as a Niner.  Then he was a backup in Philly and a starter in Tampa Bay.  When the Bucs signed him, I thought there was no way we would face him this year, but I was wrong.

Real coming-out party for Eli? New York Giants LogoOn the final day of 2007, we would like to thank all of you who have stuck with Die Hard Giants Fan throughout the 2007 season.   We had a lot of fun in our first year doing this.  We enjoyed all of your comments during the season and we hope you make even more noise now as the G-MEN head into the Playoffs.  We also hope you stick with us in the offseason, in 2008, and in years to come.  It also makes it easier writing about the Jints when they finish the season 10-6 and make the Playoffs.  It was also special to go through a game of such magnitude like the game against the Patriots in Week 17.  It was a meaningless game for the Giants, but it was everything for the 15-0 Patriots.  We all know that the Patriots have to win the Superbowl to make this perfect season really perfect.  However, I hope we face them again in a month and beat them.  For now, we know that we get to watch at least one more game next weekend when the Giants face the Bucs down in Tampa Bay.

New York Giants HelmetThis is by far the most news I’ve ever seen in one day.  Yes, the Patriots went 16-0 by beating the Giants last night.  It was aired on every channel.   The newspapers published a billion articles about it.  I enjoyed the game, but we’re down 3 men.  As soon as the Giants release a statement on their health, I’ll let you know.  Hopefully, it will have no impact on the Playoffs.  Center Shaun O’Hara is a critical loss.  The mis-snap by his replacement to Manning last night wasted a first a first down at a critical moment for Big Blue.  If O’Hara is out or not 100% next week then that’s advantage Bucs.  Sam Madison could be out next week, and we all know we need him back there.  Kawika Mitchell is another guy who has been playing well lately.  As far as the freshness factor, Gruden rested his starters two weeks in a row.  I believe that is too much.  So the momentum gained by the Giants without rest might wash out the fact that the Bucs are going to play with 2 weeks off.  1 week off is perfect, in my opinion.  Definitely stay with us as we get ready to go for a Superbowl run.

Postgame Notes - Michael Eisen provides a bunch of interesting facts.  Here’s a few that I found interesting:

  • “The Giants’ 35 points were the most allowed this season by the Patriots, who finished the season as the first 16-0 team in NFL history.”
  • “Manning completed 22 of 32 passes for 251 yards, four touchdowns and one interception for a passer rating of 118.6. It was his highest rating of the season; his previous high was 113.1 at Dallas.”
  • “Manning finished the season with 3,336 passing yards, the second-highest total of his career, and 23 touchdown passes, one less than he threw in each of the previous two seasons. He is the second Giants quarterback in history with three consecutive seasons with more than 3,000 yards and 20 touchdown passes. Phil Simms did in from 1984-86.”
  • “Brandon Jacobs rushed for 67 yards on 15 carries and finished the season with 1,009 yards – despite missing five games and most of a sixth. This is the sixth season in a row the Giants have had a 1,000-yard rusher. Tiki Barber did it each of the previous five seasons. Jacobs is the first Giants back other than Barber to rush for more than 1,000 yards since Gary Brown in 1998 (1,063).”

Newsday:

Atmosphere was just perfect

Giants O’Hara, Diehl, Madison injured - The Jints put up a great fight last night, but Shaun O’Hara, David Diehl, and Sam Madison left the game with injuries.  Hopefully this doesn’t come back and bite us in the buttocks.  O’Hara sprained his left knee, and he is schedules to have an MRI today.  The Giants haven’t released a statement on his status yet.  Kawika Mitchell also sprained his knee in the game and left the game.  Sam Madison left the game due to an abdominal strain.
