ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

January 14, 2008 By: phessional Category: Amani Toomer, Antonio Pierce, Eli Manning, Kevin Boss, NFL, New York Giants, Sam Madison, Steve Smith No Comments →

What a performance by the New York Giants! back to back to back, great output by a team thought to fail by many in the first round. They have been simply amazing and the determination of each player to step up in the big game has had the greatest impact on us.

It all begins with Eli Manning. Throughout the season, Eli has had his ups and downs. Being put down by commentators and said to not have what it takes to bring Big Blue to the Superbowl, Eli has proven his humbleness pays off at the end of the day. These past few weeks have been outstanding for the Giants and most of it thanks to Eli and his composure during our critical times.

Our offense has been very effective and a main factor of our aerial game has been the effectiveness of our dependent veteran Amani Toomer. Also, to be able to depend on our rookies in the playoffs has more than paid off, especially with Kevin Boss and Steve Smith on the field.

The defense has definitely made a statement to the NFL. It does not matter how many pro-bowlers you have on your squad when it comes to the playoffs. Alongside Antonio Pierce, the Giants have been looking powerful on many games. Even with Sam Madison hurt, we have done the right thing rotating our players. We have stepped up not completely, but enough to send the opponents home (crying in T.O.s case).

Finally, we’re on the road again. I have not seen a team so comfortable in winning on the road than the Giants. We love pressure and the underdog spirit has woken up the beast from the east. The Green Bay Packers are our next victims and we’re not sleeping on this game. Like I said before, this is the playoffs…We don’t care who you are, we want this trophy and Green Bay is getting in the way.

Giants vs Tampa Bay in 2 Weeks!

After the Giants huge win yesterday clinched the playoff spot, the Redskins victory over the Minnesota Vikings clinched the Giants the #5 seed overall. The best the Vikings or Redskins can finish is 9-7. With Tampa Bay’s loss they can do no better or worse then the 4th seed, the best record they can finish with is 10-6, but Seattle holds the Tie-Breaker.
So there it is, after many weeks of speculation and concern, the final week does not matter towards the Giants season, and man is that one helluva big relief.
The Giants will take on the Patriots in the regular season finale next Saturday night. As much as I would love to see the Giants thwart the Pats undefeated season on the last game of the season, the G-Men must treat next week like a bye. The Giants have too many banged up players and have lost too many players to injury this season, they can’t afford to lose anyone else.
If I was a betting man I would gamble on Burress and Jacobs not playing a snap. The scintillating rookie Bradshaw getting the majority of carries with Droughns spelling him. Eli, I bet, will play a series or two to continue his games started streak and Toomer will see a handful of plays. For the most part though we are going to see an offense led by Wright or Lorenzen, with Bradshaw in the backfield, Moss and Smith split wide and Boss anchoring the TE spot. Not the lineup you’d expect to knock off the Patriots….
It is also worth noting that if the Giants for some reason did play their starters all game and got waxed by the Patriots that would be an unneccesarry stomach punch leading into the playoffs. The team will be riding high after the win yesterday and will need to carry that momentum into the playoffs, which will be possible if the majority of starters sit next week.

Congrats Giants, the real season begins in two weeks down in Tampa Bay, perhaps the weakest team in the playoffs. What a great Christmas gift this was….Happy Holidays all!

Brandon JacobsOne more day until the big game begins.  I’m hoping that Tom Coughlin is smart enough to come up with a really successful game plan that will almost certainly guarantee a Playoff berth this week.  If he manages to do that then he can rest everybody like Plaxico, Eli, Jacobs, Wilson, and all of the others that are playing sub-par or are banged up and need a break.  If T.C. cannot figure out how to do that then he will have to figure out how to beat the undefeated Patriots to clinch the Playoffs while defending poor play calling which will cost him his job.  So, even though the pressure in on the Giants tomorrow, I expect big things from them just as they have delivered the past 2 seasons.  The only difference is no Tiki.  So our 2-Headed Monster needs to be that force.  Eli must continue to hand the ball off a ton of times.  The defense must not give up a lead where Coughlin believes that he needs to alter the game plan.  Just go out and win.

 TE Michael Matthews’s Season Journal

Familiar Territory - Michael Eisen put together a piece about how the Jints have been in this situation before, meaning how they need to get one win to clinch a Playoff berth.

So I guess there is no reason why we should expect anything less, right?

JINTS LOOKING TO REIGN IN WEATHER - Paul Schwartz raises this question, and Tom Coughlin answers it:

Why not practice in simulated rain if there’s a good chance you might play in real rain?

“I think we are OK when the weather is bad,” coach Tom Coughlin countered.

After the way Coughlin defended his playcalling last week, I don’t know that I can believe what he’s saying.  It has become hard to buy into it.  So he will need this team to get into the Playoffs for me to believe again.  Whether it’s against the eliminated Bills in crappy conditions or against the mighty Patriots in the swamp, I need to see it to believe it.  Show me that Eli can throw effectively in those conditions.  Eli hasn’t played well in more than a month.  With the Playoffs on the line, run the ball.

JACOBS CAN BE A GIANT WATER BUFFALO - Steve Serby had this to say about the Big Man, and how Brandon Jacobs can help out the Giants offense:

A 264-pound water buffalo like this can help in these ways: He can help silence the crowd so Manning can hear himself think; and even better, he can punish, wear down and demoralize the Bills defense by the fourth quarter.

I agree with Serby 100%, but don’t forget about Droughns.  We still have a 2-Headed Monster.  Since T.C. threw 55 times last week, he should be running 55 times this week.  Split 55 by 2 and you have a lot of carries by our 2-Headed Monster.  The weather is calling for this type of attack.  Obviously, Coach Coughlin will need to throw in some passes and play action to keep the defense honest, but Jacobs and Droughns just need to keep running like Forrest Gump.

NO SHOCK: SMITH WANTS TO STEP UP - Paul Schwartz got this quote from Steve Smith:

“I was telling myself that today, I want to be the guy to make the play,” Smith said yesterday. “These guys have been out here working hard, practicing every day. I’m a rookie, I’m just sitting here getting checks and watching them from the sideline. I want to show ‘em my worth, show I can be a playmaker for this team.”

Now that Smith is talking the talk, I hope he goes out on the field tomorrow and walks the walk.

Chase BlackburnIn tomorrow’s big game against the Eagles, Tom Coughlin and his Coaching Staff are going to have to make plenty of game-time decision about who is starting on both sides of the ball.  T.C. mentioned that all of the backups are ready to step up and play some football.  Hopefully he is correct, and we don’t get burned like the Dirty Birds did in Week 4 when they were down 5 players.

Osi UmenyioraWe are getting ready for another crazy NFC East game against the Iggles.  Last time, we sacked McNabb 12 times and I loved every minute of it.  Osi had half of them.  This time, Osi needs a bakers dozen, and the team should be at 2 dozen or something.  Enjoy.

Giants Injuries!

November 08, 2007 By: Keith Category: Derrick Ward, NFL, New York Giants, Plaxico Burress, Steve Smith No Comments →

  • Plaxico didn’t practice as usual today, but he did ride an exercise bike. (NJ.com)
  • Ward is most likely going to be listed as Doubtful this week against the Cowboys due to his groin. (Giants.com)
  • Smith is also likely going to be listed as Doubtful this weekend due to his hamstring. (NY Daily News)

There’s no doubt in my mind that Plaxico will play on Sunday.  He hasn’t missed a start so there’s no reason for him to now.  I wish Ward was playing, but I think we’ll be fine with 2 backs.  Even though we haven’t seen much of Smith, I was hoping that he would be back as the 3rd receiver against the Cowboys.  Smith is better than Moss, so I would rather see the better man in the game.  Also, the defense is going to have to double team some people.  If they double up on Plaxico and Shockey then that leaves guys like Toomer and Smith wide open.  It will be tough to move the chains with less options.

Giants Injuries!

November 07, 2007 By: Keith Category: Derrick Ward, James Butler, NFL, New York Giants, Plaxico Burress, Steve Smith No Comments →

  • RB Derrick Ward was unable to practice today due to groin and ankle injuries.
  • WR Steve Smith was unable to practice today due to a hamstring injury.  However, Smith is fully healed.  So if he gets some good reps in the rest of the week, he’ll probably get some game time on Sunday.
  • S James Butler will be suiting up on Sunday against the Cowboys after being out with hamstring and ankle injuries. (NJ.com)
  • WR Plaxico Burress returned to practice today for the first time since September 12th.  Even though he never missed a game, this is a big surprise. (Giants.com)

All of these guys will be playing on game day…This is too big of a game for anybody to sit.  This is the reason we got to 6-2…so we can show the NFC what we’re made of.

Giants Injuries!

October 23, 2007 By: Keith Category: Derrick Ward, James Butler, NFL, New York Giants, Plaxico Burress, Steve Smith No Comments →

  • RB Derrick Ward’s ankle is bothering him more than the past few weeks so he missed practice today.
  • WR Plaxico Burress’ ankle is continuing to keep him from practice.  He finally didn’t score any TDs last week.  Maybe he needs Eli to throw him a few passes in practice.
  • S James Butler also missed practice today due to his ankle/knee.
  • WR Steve Smith is supposed to start participating in “advanced practice” which must be a good thing.  We need him to start participating in the fun. (NJ.com)

  • RB Derrick Ward sat out of practice today due to a bum ankle.  He is expected to limited play on Monday.
  • WR Plaxico Burress also sat out with a bum ankle that’s been bothering him for more than a month.
  • WR Steve Smith participated in certain drills in practice, but is not expected to play on Monday. (NJ.com)

This list keeps on growing.  Here’s the updates:

  • WR Steve Smith is expected to miss two weeks due to a fractured shoulder blade.
  • DL Adrian Awasom is out for the season due to a fractured transverse process in his back. (Newsday)
  • WR Plaxico Burress has a sprained pinky finger and ankle, but he is expecting to play this week.
