Wednesday’s Giants News

January 23, 2008 By: Keith Category: Bill Belichick, Bill Parcells, Corey Webster, Eli Manning, Ernie Accorsi, Lawrence Tynes, NFL, New York Giants, Rich Seubert, Steve Spagnuolo, Super Bowl XLII, Tiki Barber, Zak DeOssie No Comments →

Lawrence TynesBack-to-back, the Divisional Playoff game between the Giants and the Cowboys and the NFC Championship game between the Giants and the Packers were two of the greatest games I have ever seen.  Both of them went right down to the final play.  We’ll see how our boys in blue do in the Super Bowl.  I believe it will be a close game, we just need a few things to bounce our way so we can come out of the desert victorious.  I prefer those 41-0 games so there is no chance of losing.  Save the excitement of the nail bitters for years when the Giants are not in the Super Bowl.

Also, the line dropped another 1/2 of a point today.  So, it opened with the Giants being 14 point underdogs.  It was 12 1/2 yesterday.  Now it’s 12.  It’s still too big so expect that gap to keep shrinking.

Giants Stats Review - Based on the history of the NFL, Michael Eisen lets us know that the Giants have a pretty good shot at winning the Super Bowl.

Newsday:

Webster has made biggest turnaround for Giants - That’s for sure.  Arthur Staple put together a great article about the turnaround of Corey Webster.

Brady’s foot injury not serious - Tom Rock stated that “The cast-like boot on his right foot was there to help what has been reported as a minor high ankle sprain. Brady will have two weeks of rest before playing again in Glendale, Ariz., on Feb. 3.
“  This is the same injury that T.O. was recovering from at the end of the season.  Nobody know for sure if the injury reported is accurate.

Boston must be stopped

Ex-Giant Anderson sees Giants upsetting Patriots - I hope Otis is good at making predictions.

Giants-Packers title game ratings winner for Fox - Neil Best stated:

Eli Manning got the last laugh on that Green Bay TV station manager who last week tried to distract him by pre-empting “Seinfeld,” his favorite show, before the NFC title game.

Last night, Fox announced that the Giants’ upset of the Packers averaged 53.9 million viewers - making it the most-watched non-Super Bowl TV show of any kind since 1998, when 76.3 million watched the finale of … yup, “Seinfeld.”

Good for Eli.  It’s funny how things come full circle.  And it’s good news for the Giants because they have been involved in some games that had everybody wanted to watch.  In Week 17, when the Giants had the opportunity to upset the 15-0 Patriots, the game set a record for being the most watched television show besides the Superbowl.  In the NFC Championship Game, it was the most watched Conference Championship game in 13 years.  And in the Superbowl, when the Giants have another shot at upsetting the 18-0 Patriots, it has to be one of the most viewed Superbowls in NFL history.

Patriots-Giants Super Bowl drives Jets fans nuts - I don’t know why.  This is news to me.  I’ve never heard any Jets fan dislike Giants fans and vice versa.  I root for the Jets all the time.  Even when they were 4-12.  If you are a Jets fan that hates Giants fans, or a Giants fan that hates Jets fans then please comment about the actual reason.  I know it exists between the Mets and the Yankees.  But I never heard of any hatred between the Jets and the Giants.

Justin TuckIn 24 hours, we will know whether or not the New York Football Giants will be representing the NFC in the Superbowl.  My guess is that they will.  I’m all pumped up right now.  There hasn’t been as much hype as last week’s game.  Last week there was so much going on from Romo’s Cabo vacation to T.O.’s injury to Patrick Crayton’s trash talking to Wade Phillip’s ugly Playoff resume to Romo’s ugly Playoff Resume to T.O.’s inability to win a Superbowl because he’s a ‘me’ player to T.O.’s get your popcorn ready to Jerry Jones’ face after the loss to T.O. crying.  Even though tomorrow could launch the Jints to the Superbowl, the victory would not be as enjoyable as the win over the Cowboys and their drama.  The Packers have to much class as an organization to allow any of the crap that Jerry Jones tolerates.

 Key Matchups

Empire State Building Lights up - That’s right Giants fans.  NYC is representing the outstanding season Big Blue had in 2007 by lighting up the Empire State Building.

Transcript: Coach Tom Coughlin

One step away - That’s right Die Hard Giants Fans.  One more win lands the NY Giants a trip to the Superbowl.

Transcript: DE Michael Strahan - Michael Strahan’s joke of the day came at the expense of the big fat contract that Justin Tuck signed yesterday.

Q.  Did Tuck come in and buy anything for the defensive linemen today?

MICHAEL STRAHAN:  No, actually I got kind of tired    I told Osi leave him alone about the money jokes.  I told Osi of all the people, we should know that the jokes get old real fast.  We’re happy for him.  He deserves every penny of it.  He’s had a great season.

So I messed with him a little bit.  But he already bought us something.  I’ll be honest with you, I bought the entire defensive line watches, Tuck bought us something.  Osi is the only one that hasn’t come out of the pocket.  So of all the people, Osi needs to stop being so cheap and spread the love a little bit.

Transcript: LB Antonio Pierce - Michael Eisen asked Antonio Pierce about the speech that Tom Coughlin will deliver to the G-MEN tonight.

Q.  Tom Coughlin says he gives a lot to thought to his pregame speech Saturday night.  How good a motivational speaker is he, and can a coach really say anything to fire you up at this stage?

ANTONIO PIERCE:  He’s been getting better, I can tell you that.  The ones before were kind of like bedtime stories.  There was too much going on.  Half the guys couldn’t relate to it.  Now he’s getting up to date, to the 2000 era.  He’s been doing a lot of things different each and every week.  We’ve had special people come in there and talk to the people, people like that, and he’s had honorary captains.  So he’s done things very differently.  Of course he says things to fire guys up.  He knows what buttons to push with certain guys on our team and I think he understands our mentality right now.

Packers Scouting Report

Newsday:

Packers’ game plan simple: Pressure Eli - It sounds easy, but the Packers D-Line has to get by the Giants O-Line.

Giants WR Smith contributing from the brink

Tuck signs 5-year, $30M extension - I believe that Justin Tuck earned the contract that the Giants gave him.  However, the timing is questionable.  It is the two days before the NFC Championship game.  Perhaps the Giants could’ve waited until after February 3, 2008 or tomorrow (worse case scenario).  Big Blue should have required Justin to have 3 sacks in each outing to get him motivated for a $30M contract extention.

Giants fans head for the tundra - I wish I was going with them.

WFAN host Craig Carton’s long march after losing bet with Boomer Esiason - I was listening to Boomer and Craig when he said that.  He said that there was no way that the Giants would beat the Cowboys.  Boomer and Craig placed a wager on the spread.  If Craig lost then he had to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge in a speedo and a tight Giants jersey.  Big Blue came through so Craig did what he had to do.

New York GiantsI’m in the process of watching the games as I write.  You already saw that Die Hard Giants Fan picked the Giants to cover the spread, but we also believe that Big Blue will win outright.  The Giants/Bucs pregame will be coming out next, and I will be telling you how and why the Giants will win this game tomorrow.  Enjoy the games!

Newsday:

Ronde Barber not backing down from comments

With injuries, Webster rises anew on depth chart - Arthur Staple noted that Sam Madison is listed as doubtful for tomorrow’s game, and Corey Webster will most likely get the start.

Giants’ Mitchell braces for some playing time - Arthur Staple reported that Kawika Mitchell is now listed as questionable for tomorrow’s game.  Also, remember the play against the Patriots when Vince Wilfork stuck his finger in Brandon Jacobs’ eye and it wasn’t called?  Well, ”Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork was fined $15,000 by the NFL on Friday for poking a finger inside the facemask of Brandon Jacobs Dec. 29. Wilfork was not penalized on the play. It was the third time he had been fined this season. - AP”

Antonio PierceThe amount of Giants news this week has been unbelievable.   And with that said, there really isn’t anything written really well about the Giants.  It’s all mostly common sense stuff like the Giants have to run the ball against the Bucs.  There has been some great stories in The Post this week about the Knicks, but we’re not here to talk about the Knicks.  There has been some great stories about Roger Clemens, but were not here to talk about him either.  And it’s all deserved.  And by the way, I’m very happy that I didn’t have to listen to Tiki, Shockey, and Strahan complain all season.  Thanks for listening to Coach Coughlin when he told you all to shut up and play with the exception of Tiki who’s job now is to talk and talk and talk.

Bucs Scouting Report

Newsday:

Five things the Giants must do to Beat the Bucs

Giants credit Spagnuolo for turning around defense - On the defensive side of the ball, I’m very happy with Spags as I said yesterday.

Giants’ Gilbride salutes Bucs’ defensive guru - I bet he did.  Gilbride struggles putting up points in every game so I’m sure that this is a real challenge trying to figure the Bucs out.  I hope that we can get a new OC this offseason, but we’ll cover that in the offseason.

New York Daily News:

Inside the Matchups: Giants at Bucs

Moment is right for Eli Manning to follow Peyton’s lead - I love the positive vibes coming out of the Daily News.  Gary Myers tells us how Eli can win a first round Playoff game faster than Peyton did.  He doesn’t mention the talent difference between the Colts and the Giants though.  When Peyton couldn’t win a Playoff game, it was because they only had 3 offensive players that mattered and Peyton being one of them.  Eli has played on Giants teams with some of the best at their position in the game like Tiki, Shockey, Toomer, Burress, etc.  With the talent around Eli, he should win faster, but he isn’t as integral to the offense as Peyton was.  If Eli only handed off to James and threw to Harrison then he wouldn’t be in the Playoffs.

Plaxico Burress to Bucs’ Ronde Barber: Worry about me, not Eli Manning - Burress tries to deter Ronde Barber.  Obviously, Ronde will be covering Plaxico, but maybe Ronde knows that he’s in a few blitz schemes to bring Eli down.

Road-savvy Giants believe they can travel all the way to the Super Bowl - These comments were provided by Plaxico and TuckI wish they reserved these kinds of comments for the locker room.

Jon Gruden: Brandon Jacobs poses big problem - I heard the interview with Gruden on Monday, I believe.  The Daily News is bringing this to us late.  Obviously, Gruden knows that the Giants want to hand the ball off to Jacobs all day.  So, he’s going to have everybody shut Jacobs down and I believe it will be successful for a while because it will be their primary focus.  What the Giants need to do is keep doing it until the Bucs are worn out and can’t tackle him anymore.  OC Gilbride needs to stick with the run no matter what.

December 24, 2007 By: phessional Category: Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, Die Hard Giants Fan, NFL, New York Giants, Tiki Barber No Comments →

The New York Giants have created absolute power in the running aspect of the game. Our starter Brandon Jacobs; third and fourth string Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw have showed the NFL that no matter who is running the ball for the Giants, it’s going to be a tough day for any defense.

Brandon Jacobs, the destroyer, has definitely put the numbers up for any doubt. Yes his injuries were a heavy toll on the Giants and in the beginning yes, it was looking like he might not be the next best thing. Jacobs is past all the nonsense now and has given himself some good recognition amongst his Giants fans as a monster in the running back position. We were all right when we said he’ll become a beast and with the experience he’s getting, it’s only a matter of time before he starts using other techniques to make his running game even more effective. Think not? he’ll be around for a while and you’ll see the progression of Jacobs to become the next best thing.

Derrick Ward was known to carry the weight and maintain the pace in Tiki Barber times. Now, eventhough injured, has earned the respect of defenders to be able to carry the game. Ward gives our running game what Tiki gave us which is finesse. He is very elusive and it is always exciting to watch him run the ball while defenders just miss him. On the other hand, Ahmad Bradshaw is beginning to earn what I saw in the kid from the very start. He impressed me during pre-season and has shown he has the ability to do it during regular season. He is also starting to see not just in front of him but ahead of him.

Our offensive line may have some trouble here and there with the passing but the running schemes are being worked to perfection. To allow our runners to break for big gains means we are getting the job done at the line of scrimage.

Bottomline, we are a threat. I know it may seem like we fall sometimes and can’t figure a way to get up but the spirit remains. Hopefully, we can give the public what they have been waiting for and show them how team spirit can get it done.

Sunday’s Giants Links

December 23, 2007 By: Keith Category: Bill Parcells, Brandon Jacobs, David Tyree, Kevin Dockery, Manuel Wright, NFL, New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora, Tiki Barber, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

Kevin EverettEven though I’m a Die Hard Giants Fan and Big Blue is playing for their Playoff lives, the biggest story of the day is that Kevin Everett will be walking on the field either in the pregame or during halftime.  We don’t want to downplay the outstanding medical staff of the Bills as well as the willpower of Everett for fighting through this situation and getting him to walk again.

CB Dockery, DT Wright and WR Tyree do not make trip - Michael Eisen pointed out that a few Giants didn’t make the trip to Buffalo.  Big Blue is already banged up on defense, and now they will play without Kevin Dockery who has been filling in for Aaron Ross in the secondary.  Manny Wright has not started recently, but Tom Coughlin has used him from time to time the last few weeks.  Last, Tyree’s mother passed away this week.  God bless her soul.  So David Tyree will not be able to make it to the game today.  This may impact the field position on some kick returns, but it is what it is.

Newsday:

Attaboy, Tom! You’re the best! - Anthony Rieber made a list about who’s the best manager in New York.  Obviously, Isiah Thomas was at the bottom, and somehow Tom Coughlin topped their list.

Bills-Giants matchup is test for Coughlin - Arthur Staple got this out of Tom Coughlin regarding today’s game, “We know that anything goes here,” he said. “Anything goes.”

Just like that, Giants aren’t lock for playoffs

New York Daily News:

Brandon Jacobs looking to take Tiki Barber’s torch - Hank Gola pointed out what Tiki Barber did when the pressure was on:

In the last two seasons, when the Giants needed to win their final games to make the playoffs, Barber came up with two of his greatest games - in last year’s season finale in Washington, where he had 258 total yards and the year before in Oakland, where he had 263.

Hank believes that Brandon Jacobs needs a game like that for Big Blue to clinch a Wild Card spot.

No matter what, we still have the running game

October 30, 2007 By: phessional Category: Brandon Jacobs, NFL, New York Giants, Tiki Barber No Comments →

If our passing game fails, at least we can depend on our rushing game to help out big time.

Due to Tiki’s absence we have not slowed down a bit in the rushing scheme, only now the spot takes its turns. Brandon Jacobs, our main weapon, has been plowing and keeps boosting his total yards gained. He is the reason why in three of our last 4 games our rushing totals have been 188, 188 and 189. Jacobs rushed for 131 yards giving him a total of 3 games over the 100 mark this season. I can only wait what he’ll do next now that he seems to have a tighter grasp at the position. He has upgraded his vision from what I been seeing and getting patient to find the hole. The best thing is once this man finds the hole he blasts through it until someone gets in his way. Then, he tries to pound through them…how exciting is that.

We were not able to hurt the Dolphins the way we wanted to due to the poor weather. Our only way to really break them was to run the ball at them and the strategy worked.

Ward for 100 yards and more

September 27, 2007 By: phessional Category: Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, NFL, New York Giants, Tiki Barber No Comments →

As the team develops, I can see Derrick Ward making the difference for the team.

I have always thought of Ward as a decent running back behind Tiki Barber. He never played an entire game and I think that’s the reason why we did not see his full capabilities. Some players need to feel “the rush” in order to play at their peak and I think that’s what is happening here. Ward is understanding the complexity of a starting running back and learning it very well. He had Tiki to watch and learn from and he has been applying a similar style to his game. He has become a major contributor for the offense that we have started to depend on him.

Even if Brandon Jacobs returns, I would still give Ward 60-70% of the carries. He is the one with more finesse in his ability to cut and find the hole. I can see Ward accomplishing a 100 yard game and more against the Eagles this Sunday. Not dis-crediting the Eagles defense but this young man is not far at all from figuring out a way to make a break for longer yard gains.

He’s not much of an explosive man through the middle but the gains will come from the sides. A good tight end and fullback blocking should allow him to take it to the next level. Let’s see what happens against the Eagles.

Guess Who’s Talking Smack?

September 22, 2007 By: Keith Category: Antonio Pierce, NFL, New York Giants, Tiki Barber No Comments →

It’s nobody new…It’s Tiki Barber.  Who does he have a problem with now?  That would be defensive captain Antonio Pierce.  During an interview, Pierce blasted an airhorn each time a reporter asked him a question and Tiki had plenty to say about that.  But Tiki wasn’t the only person that had something to say about it, loudmouth Shannon Sharpe also chimed in.

On his radio show the Barber Shop on Sirius Radio, Tiki said that Pierce’s behavior was “completely disrespectful”.  He then went on to say, “Now that (the Giants) are struggling, first of all he runs away from it early in the week and now he’s refusing to answer questions by being completely disrespectful to a group of people who are just trying to do their job.  That’s the job of media, ask the question. And you don’t have to answer it. But don’t be rude.”

On another Sirius Radio show, Movin’ the Chains, Sharpe had to say about Pierce’s behavior:

It’s childish and very trivial and totally uncalled for. Whether I caught 10 (passes) for 115 (yards) and two (touchdowns) or I caught one for five and we lost by 14, I was going to talk, because if you’re going to talk when things are going good, I need you to talk when things are going bad. And that’s how it was.

But don’t be childish. That is so ridiculous. It irks me when I see guys act like that. That’s ridiculous. Are you 14? Or are you 28, 29, making millions of dollars to play a kid’s game? And you act like this?
