Tuesday’s Giants News: Diehl Gets 6-Year Extention

May 06, 2008 By: Keith Category: Brandon Jacobs, David Diehl, Michael Strahan, NFL, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

David DiehlThe NY Giants hooked up David Diehl with a new 6-year contract extention worth about $31 million.  Diehl played left tackle last season without making left tackle money.  Add winning the Super Bowl to your resume, and I guess you can get a $31 million contract.  Expect Diehl to be the starting left tackle for a few years because he’s getting paid to do so.

Jay Fund Event Recap - Michael Eisen tells us how successful the Jay Fund Event was this weekend.

Breakfast Matters - John Schmeelk pointed out that Brandon Jacobs paid a visit to George Washington High School in Manhattan.  The purpose of Jacobs’ visit was to encourage children to eat three meals per day.

New York Times:

Coughlin’s Playful Side Has Deep Roots in Florida - John Branch also covered Tom Coughlin’s charity event this weekend.

The Star-Ledger:

Differing opinions on Strahan - Mike Garafolo lets us know how some Giants think that Michael Strahan will be back, and others think he will retire.  Garafolo also provided this video where Strahan tells us nothing new.

Giants reward Diehl with extension - Mike Garafolo reported that the Giants gave David Diehl a six-year, $31-million contract extension.  Diehl is a stud.  He bounced around the O-Line as requested by the team.  He ended up playing left tackle last season when the Giants cut Petigout.  Most of us never expected Diehl to be able to fill that void, but he did and deserves his extention.

Saturday’s Giants News

Keon LattimoreAccording to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, The ‘Boys have officially announced the signing of Maryland running back Keon Lattimore to a free-agent deal.  Lattimore is Ray Lewis‘ brother, and Jerry Jones must be hoping that he can quickly get into some trouble in Big-D.  That will add to the bad boy image that Jones wants wants to portray.

Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation - Michael Eisen stated that Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation will hold its 13th annual dinner and celebrity golf classic this weekend in Ponte Vedra Beach.

New York Daily News:

Amani Toomer: ‘No question’ Michael Strahan will return - On Wednesday night, Alex Marvez and Jerry Rice had Amani Toomer on as a guest on Sirius NFL Radio’s Late Hits.  Ralph Vacchiano provided the transcript of the interview.

Thursday’s Giants News: More on White House Visit

May 01, 2008 By: Keith Category: NFL, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

Eli ManningToday’s news is all about Big Blue’s vist to the White House yesterday.  All of the articles below overlap.  The funniest thing I read about it was that President Bush really believes in the Jessica Simpson jinx, and he blames her for the Cowboys losing to the Giants.  I would have told you that the Giants won because of multiple factors like Wade Phillips has an awful Postseason record, Tony Romo chokes in the Playoffs, T.O. is not a win first player, and the Giants ‘D’ was downright nasty in the 2nd Half of that game.  If President Bush wants to blame Jessica Simpson then that’s his choice.  I really don’t care.  Seeing Jerry Jones’ face after that game was priceless.  Seeing T.O. pretending to cry was also priceless.  I would love to see that more often.

Inspirational Visit - Michael Eisen stated that the Giants visited the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Wednesday’s Giants News: Kevin Boss Q&A

April 09, 2008 By: Keith Category: Kevin Boss, NFL, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

Kevin BossOn Friday, Big Blue will be hosting a workout session for some draft hopefuls.  Most of them are local athletes which we wrote about a couple of days ago.  With the draft coming up soon, we’ll see if the Jints take any of the players that they’ve been scouting.

Still riding high - Vic Carucci says that Coach Coughlin is still riding high on the crest of a congratulatory wave.

Kevin Boss Q/A - Michael Eisen sat down with and had an exclusive interview with one of the players that had one of the biggest catches in Super Bowl XLII, TE Kevin BossHere’s one question that I found interesting because I never knew there was a Kevin Boss Day.

Q: Can you tell us about Kevin Boss Day?

Boss: “They honored me at halftime of a basketball game at Western Oregon (his alma mater) and I signed some autographs. It was fun to get back there and see a lot of my coaches. I played basketball in college for two years, so a lot of the guys that were playing there I played with. It was fun just to see friends and get to chat it up with old friends there.”

New York Times:

Group of Players Plans Removal of Upshaw - Judy Battista found out that, “Baltimore Ravens kicker Matt Stover has proposed a plan to replace the N.F.L. union chief Gene Upshaw by next spring, when the union will most likely be engaged in critical negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.”  Obviously, this is more NFL news than Giants news.  If you are interested in the status of the removal of Gene Upshaw, ProFootballTalk.com has written a few articles about him.

The Star-Ledger:

One more name for the list - Mike Garafolo just learned that one more player will be attending the Friday workouts for the Giants.  The player who was added to the list is the running back back from Troy, Kenny Cattouse.  Garafolo also noted Cattouse’s achievements.

Thursday’s Giants News: Preseason Opponents Announced

April 03, 2008 By: Keith Category: NFL, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

The NFL announced the opponents that the G-MEN will face in the 2008 Preseason which gets me a little giddy because it’s a sign that football is coming.  Even though we know the opponents that the Jints will face in 2008 already, the Regular Season schedule will be released in a few weeks.  Once we see the order of the teams that they have to face, we can start breaking it down.

Preseason Opponents Announced - Michael Eisen listed the Giants 2008 Preseason opponents:

  • Week 1 - Carolina Panthers
  • Week 2 - Cleveland Browns
  • Week 3 - New York Jets
  • Week 4 - New York Patriots

The Week 2 game against the Browns will be nationally televised at 8:00 pm on August 18, and the game will be televised on ESPN.  Regarding the other three games, the dates and times are yet to be determined.

New York Daily News:

Tom Coughlin’s changes fit for a title - Gary Meyers discusses the changes Tom Coughlin made prior to a season where Big Blue won the Super Bowl.  I was watching the Jets show on SNY last night, and I heard Eric Mangini say that he needed to make changes too.  In the copy-cat league known as the NFL, it seems like the Jets may win the Super Bowl if Mangini makes the necessary changes. LOL.

New York Times:

Redskins Are the New Adventure for Zorn - If you want to know more about the enemy, Greg Bishop talked to Jim Zorn about becoming the Head Coach of the Washington Redskins.

The Star-Ledger:

Are you ready for some (preseason) football? - Mike Garafolo discusses the Giants 2008 Preseason opponents.

Wednesday’s Giants News: Scouts at Rutgers

March 26, 2008 By: Keith Category: Antonio Pierce, Giants Stadium, NFL, New York Giants, Rich Seubert, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

Ray RiceWhile Jerry Reese went to the pro day at LSU, two Giants scouts were check out players at Rutgers.  The Draft is about a month away now.  I’m always so impatient about it because I want to know what type of talent will be on the Giants the following season.  When you pick 32nd, so many things can happen which makes it almost unpredictable.  However, it’s worth picking 32nd because they are the reigning Champions.

Special Meeting - Michael Eisen pointed out that Tom Coughlin invited Lieutenant General Ray Odierno and his son to Giants Stadium.

Good to be a Champion! - Khalil Garriott found out that Antonio Pierce has not come down from cloud nine two months after winning Super Bowl XLII!

Giants extend G Seubert - Michael Eisen also covered the contract extention that the Giants gave to Rich Seubert.  The Star-Ledger reported this story yesterday.

Newsday:

Super Bowl champ Giants offer extension to guard Seubert

New York Daily News:

Giants sign Rich Seubert to three-year extension

New York Post:

SEUBERT RE-UPS FOR THREE YEARS

The Star-Ledger:

Snippets from Rutgers pro day - Mike Garafolo attended the pro day at Rutgers and kept an eye on a bunch of draft hopefuls: RB Ray Rice, OL Jeremy Zuttah, OL Mike Fladell, DB Ron Girault, WR James Townsend, and DT Eric Foster.  Garafolo stated that the Giants had two scouts there but no coaches.

Season opener could be a bit earlier - Mike Garafolo found out that “The defending Super Bowl champions’ season opener, which will be played at Giants Stadium, might kick off at 7 p.m. — rather than the usual 8:30 start — in order to avoid a conflict with the last day of the Republican National Convention.”  Is anybody going to watch the Convention over opening day of the NFL?

A done deal with Seubert

Monday’s Giants News: Carr as backup QB Rumor?

March 10, 2008 By: Keith Category: NFL, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

David CarrSo the other day, I was on the phone with one of our other Giants Bloggers, Phessional.  We were discussing Super Bowl XLII.  He said that he still can’t believe that Big Blue won.  I agreed with him because it still feels like it didn’t happen.  Where did that come from?  How did they beat the 18-0 Patriots (or what the experts called ‘the greatest team of all time)?  How many times have you pinched yourself since then?  What I realized is that I’m awake.

Fans Take - Giants fans talk about their emotions throughout the season.

Newsday:

Coughlin matter of fact about new Giants deal - Bob Glauber also wrote about Tom Coughlin’s new contract.

The Star-Ledger:

Giants test-driving Carr - Mike Garafolo reported that QB David Carr will be meeting with the Giants on Tuesday night and Wednesday night.  I think Carr can be a good fit for the Giants.  Most of the other guys that the Giants met with were really old.  David is only two years older than Eli, and has potential to be good with an O-Line.  We’ve never seen him play with a solid line.  Watching Carr on the Texans was like watching Bledsoe on the Pats before Brady.  I never understood how the O-Line became so good as soon as Bledsoe got sidelined, but that has nothing to do with Carr.  Carr has a really strong arm too.

Sunday’s Giants News: CB and Backup QB Search Continues…

March 09, 2008 By: Keith Category: David Tyree, NFL, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

Brian KellySo Brian Kelly signed with the Lions and Trent Green is expected to sign with the Rams today.  So the Giants are still searching for another cornerback and a backup quarterback.  You would think that the it would be easier for the Super Bowl champs to fill their needs than teams like the Lions and the Rams.  Both of them are dome teams which I don’t like anyway.  Green already played for the Rams so he might feel comfortable there, but they were 5-11 in 2007.  Both of these teams must be opening their checkbooks for these guys because it makes no sense for a player to choose the Lions or the Rams over the Giants…

New York Daily News:

Tom Coughlin ecstatic about new deal - Ralph Vacchiano got some quotes from Tom Coughlin regarding his new contract.

I was thrilled to become the head coach of the New York Giants in 2004. It would be difficult for me to capture the emotions for the opportunity I was given back in 1988 to be an assistant coach with the Giants. And then to have the opportunity to be the head coach was the fulfillment of a dream of a lifetime.

And now to be able to continue in that capacity - with this organization, with this leadership, with this football team and with my coaching staff in place - is something my family and I are extremely excited about.

At the end of the article, Vacchiano reported that Brian Kelly agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions yesterday.  Trent Green may sign with the St. Louis Rams today.  The Giants were interested in both Kelly and Green, so they can be scratched off the list of available free agents as well.

New York Post:

TWIN PEAKS - Paul Schwartz interviewed David Tyree regarding his twin baby girls, Sophia and Hannah.

KUDOS TO TOM - Paul Schwartz also captured Tom Coughlin’s emotions over the new contract.

The Star-Ledger:

Coughlin contract finally a done deal

Saturday’s Giants News: Tom Coughlin is Officially Back

March 08, 2008 By: Keith Category: NFL, New York Giants, Plaxico Burress, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

Tom CoughlinIt’s finally official, Tom Coughlin will be back as the Coach of the New York Football Giants.  The Jints gave Coughlin a four-year contract worth $21 million, as was speculated.  So Tom will be the Coach through 2011, and he will be there when the they open up in the new stadium.  Coach Coughlin got the Giants to the Playoffs three years in a row, lets hope we get there seven years in a row when he’s finished here in New York.

Coach Coughlin signs new contract - The Giants and Coach Tom Coughlin agreed on a new four-year contract.  Michael Eisen provided all of Tom Coughlin’s accomplishments which support the contract that he earned.

Equipment Director Joe Skiba Chat Archive - Giants.com provided the transcript that Giants fans had with Joe Skiba.

Best Play by a TE in 2007? - John Schmeelk included 5 plays made by a Tight End in 2007, and Giants.com asks you, the fans, to decide which of the following was the best play by a TE!  For me, that’s an easy one.  The 45-yard pass to Kevin Boss in Super Bowl XLII gets my vote.

Newsday:

Coughlin gets four years, $21 million

Giants give Tom Coughlin new deal

New York Post:

New York Times:

Coughlin Signs Deal to Coach for 4 Years

The Star-Ledger:

Coughlin contract almost complete

Seahawks signing Julius Jones - Mike Garafolo reported that the Seahawks and Julius Jones agreed to a four-year deal worth $3 million per year just days after signing T.J. Duckett to a five-year deal worth $14 million.  Garafolo assumed that Shaun Alexander won’t be around much longer.

One more thought on Plax - According to Mike Garafolo, Plaxico Burress is really agitated that Javon Walker just signed a six-year deal worth $55 million which is twice as much as the deal that Burress signed in ‘05.  My thoughts on this are Plaxico should honor the contract he signed.  He had issues on and off the field, and was worth less.  What did Burress do in ‘05 and ‘06?  Nothing.  Defenders picked off the passes, and Plaxico didn’t even tackle the defenders.  Burress played one great year on one leg.  If the Giants give him the contract, are we going to get the ‘07 Plaxico or the pre-’07 Plaxico?

Coughlin’s deal done

Friday’s Giants News

March 07, 2008 By: Keith Category: Eli Manning, NFL, New York Giants, Tom Coughlin No Comments →

Tom CoughlinThe Dirty Birds ended up cutting Takeo Spikes which creates $5 million in cap space.  It seems like the NFC teams that have been the busiest in the free agent markets have been the Saints, the Eagles, the 49ers, and the Vikings.  Besides the Niners, the other teams were fighting for a Playoff berth at the end of last season so their recent additions could be enough to get them into the Playoffs next season.

For two years in a row, three NFC East teams made the Playoffs so we will need to see how long that will last.  Philly was playing at their best down the stretch of ‘07 but was the only NFC East team not to make the Playoffs.  So far, they have been the busiest NFC East team which should help them out next year.  The Redskins barely got into the Playoffs in ‘07, but also got really hot down the stretch.  They have been pretty dormant during free agency.  The Cowboys dominated the NFC last year.  They made a couple of moves, but nothing drastic.  I read that Julius Jones is supposed to meet with the Seahawks.  If he leaves than they don’t have a running back which benefits the rest of us.  I don’t know if the Cowboys believe that Barber is going to be their every down back or if they have another young guy.  There is no reason why three teams can’t come out of the NFC East in ‘08.  Hopefully Big Blue is one of them.

Eli reaches out - Michael Eisen pointed out that Eli Manning was named the official Celebrity Chairman for the March of BabiesCelebrity Chairman does not have the same ring to it as Super Bowl MVP does, right?

The Star-Ledger:

Coughlin extension appears ready to go - Each day, the official announcement of Tom Coughlin’s contract extension gets delayed so we’ll see what happens.

Kelly comes and goes … - Mike Garafolo revealed that CB Brian Kelly left without a contract from the Giants.
